Something is missing from this story.
« on: January 15, 2015, 07:29:58 PM »
A man allegedly phones in a bomb threat, cops show up at his house and he shoots the local police chief 3 times.
Of course he is taken into custody but has now been released. I'm thinking something major has Ben left out of the story.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Here's one thing:

No, there's a lot Ben left out of the story.

I call it fiction if only because they say no cops shot back at the guy.  Even Okies know better than that.

My very paranoid mind wants to say it was a drill gone bad - Mr. Bomb-threat switched up his real gun for the airsolft he was supposed to be using?

???
They bust in, he shoots, realizes his mistake, drops his gun, is taken in without further incident, is released from "investigative detention" because the prosecutor thinks his claim of self-defense within his home might be valid.
???
In the meantime, they figure out that either a roommate called in the bomb threat or it became evident that somebody spoofed the phone number or pinned into his phone line.  (Kid wanting to get out of an exam or who had a grudge against him?)
???

But I, too, await further information.

I'm not signing this one so nobody will know who posted it.

Find it interesting that the Chief just happened to borrow a vest from the county just prior to this "raid" also.  He doesn't have his own already?

Police Chiefs don't wear vests - it looks tacky on the TV, as well as making them look another 20 pounds overweight.

Which is why the presence of the Chief in the initial rush is very interesting [/Arty Johnson voice].

yep sounds like a swating gone wrong.  I hope if they catch whoever did it, they charge them with the attempted murder of the chief.

This and that he also gets his "seized" weapons back.

Which leaves one to wonder why they thought it did in the first place.

If that is the case, I am glad they are not holding it against the homeowner.  In some juridications they would likely throw the book at him regardless if he wasn't already dead.

Sounds like he wanted some good publicity.  Maybe the city council has been questioning how useful he is, and he figured this would be a quick and easy, high profile way to show that he's a valuable part of the department.

One would hope they'd do more than look at the consumer-grade caller ID before staging a raid.  Then again, we are talking about government employees here.

Horton and his wife were briefly detained and released when Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation realized he had no idea the police were raiding his house, a statement released by OSBI read.

...

Detectives later learned the bomb threat sent at about 4 a.m. for the Sentinel Community Action Center did not originate from his home.

As if we needed more proof that the abuse of no-knock warrants and SWAT teams needs to be halted. If the [innocent] homeowner had been killed, the cops would have just written it off as collateral damage. Now that whoever prepared the warrant almost got his (or her) chief killed, maybe they'll start paying closer attention to why correct information is important.
