I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

I'm in it, no problem.

The very first set of pictures is interesting. It looks as if the island were extended. There's a big spit of land in the today photo that's not there in 1945.

Neat! In the one photo of the pilots soaking in "spa" tubs, they're drinking beer from cone top cans...

Iwo is still quite volcanically active. There have been a number of eruptions on the island since the end of WWII.  Perhaps that is the source of the longer spit of land.
There has also been a lot of uplift caused by subterranean magma at various places around the island.  It has been measured at rates as high as a meter/year.

If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

combat aircraft operations were dangerous back then, especially for the crew. I'm guessing the problem was exacerbated though by lack of space on the island. Not much room between maintenance, storage, and landing areas.
