but also, woman were pretty restricted. So it could be a symbol on par with foot binding, so pale would be an indication that she stayed at home, inside.

That matches what I was told. Spousal unit #1's grandfather led a group out of China at the end of the Qing. Her mother's feet were unbound at that time. Her step-mother's feet were bound for a significantly longer time, and I never saw her walk unassisted. She, spousal unit #1, loved to hang around the swimming pool and achieved a magnificent dark tan. The older ladies in the family were highly critical, "You are darker than a farmer!"  The next generation down had no problems with tans.

Heck, you can read a few books about Japan, and figure that out. Probably does not even take that much. Unless you're a leftist. They seem to have trouble recognizing non-white ethnocentrism.
