Speaking [more] of grills...
« on: March 18, 2015, 12:18:30 PM »
It's spring break from my community college courses, and we're having nice weather.  I took the last two days off work and have been working on building a smoker.

The main body is 1/4 inch thick, 20 inches in diameter, and 48 inches long.  It's extremely heavy.  Most of it has been constructed with MIG, running .030 wire and straight CO2.  Some of it was done with 6013 rod and an AC225.

I have more expanded sheet that will form a wrap around table for a work surface, and a tray for underneath.

Awesome!  What is the main body, a well casing or something?

Mount it on a cheap trailer.

Very awesome. We want more photos when you're done

A little slicker than mine. Similar dimensions. I built mine in the spring of '99.

A couple of suggestions, it looks like the top of your fire box is round, add a flat shelf for a warming tray, mine is all a flat box and while I probably lose some efficiency I can keep a big pot of beans hot on top of it.
I'm also thinking you need your flue on the other end of the cooking box so the smoke and heat will draw across the cooking area, the way  it is now it looks like you'll have a direct path out of the firebox and up and out the flue.

We use the little Weber grill for quick grilling when it's just the wife and I.

Not sure, it was a recycled bit of steel I bought used.

RKL, very nice.  Did you do it from prints, or just wing it?  What kind of paint did you end up using?  Anything you would do differently if you had a chance to build it again?

A flat spot might be a good idea.  My firebox has a sloped roof on it, I didn't want a flat spot that water would collect on.  I can see the utility of it, though.

I have the smoke channelling through a section of half round on the bottom of the main body.  It takes the flue gasses from the firebox to the other side of the main body.  The idea is to help keep an even temperature by creating counterflow heat exchange.

I just winged it after looking at the heavy duty commercial models available. As for what I'd do different, I'd use wheels more like what you made up rather than the rubber ones on mine. Something that I will probably change out "someday" probably after one of the rubber ones fail completely.
I would probably make the firebox a little smaller I think I lose a good bit of efficiency with it the way it is.

Another thought for you, when I built mine I inadvertently added a bit of slope to the whole thing away from the fire box. (tactical error adding the wheels ) but it worked out, the grease and drippings tended to collect in the bottom away from the fire box so I just drilled a hole to allow the grease to drain out and set a pan under it to collect it.

The paint I used was what ever name brand high-temp barbeque/stove paint the farm store had on the shelf, it needs a touch up but hasn't been repainted in almost 16 years of use and weather.
