Dear patient with hypertension
« on: April 09, 2015, 12:04:32 PM »
Dear patient, you have hypertension and you really should take your medication for it.  I understand that you are facing a jail sentence, and you are skipping your meds to drive up your blood pressure in the hope that the jail will not take you.  You should not ask me to lie to the judge about this.  This only convinces me all the more that the best place for you clinically is in the jail.  There, the nurse will watch you take your blood pressure medication, and I bet your blood pressure will become as right as rain!  You can thank me later.

Good to know, since I just started BP medication this week.

But, I'm not planning anything that will get me a trip to the license plate academy any time soon.

I went on BP meds about 7 yrs ago. Lisinopril HCTZ 20/25. Had a month or so of some minor muscle aches but that was about it. I take it religiously and, as a result, my BP is always right on the money.

Me too- started on it about 2 years ago. Dr. took me off of it for awhile when I lost some weight and was doing a lot of cardio, as I was getting dizzy and my BP was pretty low. BP went back to low(ish) borderline, so I went back on it.

That's what I'm taking, too.

Had a bout with bad stomach the first day, resulting in my taking the next day off work so as not to be caught on the train with gastric issues.

Have had a few muscle aches, but otherwise no issues with it at all. Haven't taken my BP since I started taking the meds, but I guess I should decommission the salt lick I had installed on my desk...

Only thing I've noticed is that it makes me very sensitive to dehydration. If I get the slightest bit dehydrated my body reacts by over-retaining fluids for a day or two.

It's not dehydration.

Try Midol.

Same thing I've been taking for a couple of years.  When I first started taking it, it gave me a cough (listed side effect), but after a few months of taking it that seems to have mostly gone away.

You could always mention in passing that it is possible for meth and cocaine to drive the blood pressure even higher. ;)

Way back when  :old: a study about something came up with the result that Rxing Lisinopril for patients who had a first heart attack reduced their chances of a second one by something like 40+ %.  Being a good patient my BP was in the low part of the normal range, but the next time I went in to see my doc I was told that given the apparent prophylaxic effect they could not risk their malpractice insurance by not Rxing it for me.  I'm still on it and my BP is still in the low part of the normal range.  But (knock on wood) I have not had a second heart attack since being put on the stuff.

I dehydrated a bit and I would have a gout flare uo, which is how they found my minor kidney issues.  Allopurinol to the rescue!

My blood pressure was borderline high for a lot of my adult life mainly when I didn't exercise.  I started to get in the range my doctor was prescribing mild blood pressure meds.  Between some moderate exercise and my breathing machine, that went away.

I take Amlodipine and I was on Benazepril; but my new doc switched that to Lisinopril. I've never had any side effects from any of them thankfully, and as a result of the switch both my meds are free at Publix. Much better then the $75 at Walmart.

Can we put type 2 diabetics in prison too? Best medical advance ever!

Mr. Sugardaddy, have you been following your carefully thought out, evidence based combined therapy prescribed treatment?

Why Yes! Of Course!

So tell me, why is your A1C over 10%... and why do I see... what appears to be... cake crumbs.. on your shirt?

Really? wha.. well I don't know!... and I just had a bite before coming in this morning because I was feeling a bit faint. Maybe my sugar might have been a bit low...

*Pricks finger* yeah... No Mr. Sugardaddy, 340...  340...

Why can't we just get a relief valve and an overflow tank for when the pressure is too high?  It works for car radiators.

And put all those leeches out of business?  Never!

Besides, the Bleeders' Union would not stand for it.

Both sides of my family have a history of hypertension. On my fathers side my Father is the anomaly amongst males making it well into his 70's. Of course both of his carotid arteries have been bypassed also.

Have any of you tried controlling blood pressure with diet and/or supplements? How about regular cardio exercise?

Oddly my sister and I both have not only acceptable but really good blood pressure readings. We both are pretty responsible eaters that probably drink a little more than we should. I'm way more physically active than her but she is an on and off again runner.

The reason I ask is because I'm trying to build habits that will keep me off daily pills even though I realize my genetics may be my destiny in this matter.
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.
