I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

Better tools to ID remains now but I'm still for letting the dead rest.

Quote
Speaking by phone from Honolulu, Emory said that proper identification means a lot to the families of those who lost loved ones -- and to him.

Next of kin were being notified starting Tuesday. Service members who are identified will be returned to their families for burial, with full military honors

Emory likely made enough waves to get the attention of some higher ups wife who then pushed the issue?

A noble enough cause I suppose but I don't have a dog in the fight.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

I don't have a dog in the fight either but I say let them RIP.  IMHO there is no reason for this.

I know if I were one of the unknown dead I'd like to have my name back.

I was thinking it might be better to put a wall around it underwater, fill it with concrete, and make a memmorial on top.

 ???

The Oklahoma was raised.  That's when they took all the bodies out and buried them.  (They were later transferred to The Punchbowl when that site was created.)

She was later scrapped after it was determined the damage was too extensive to salvage.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Oklahoma_(BB-37)

NOT Arizona.

Okay.  Getting myself confused there.  Now it makes more sense.

What? Why now?
http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/14/us/uss-oklahoma-remains/index.html

So they are going to dig them up from Punchbowl to do DNA tests?  At first I thought they were talking about raising the Oklahoma again -- but the Oklahoma is not a "war grave". (it sank in deep water somewhere, being towed to a scrap yard; almost took a tugboat down with it)

Yes, they are going to dig them up and do DNA testing in order to get profiler, and then see if the profiles of any known descendant "matches".

When DOD started recovering bodies from Vietnam a lot of families registered their DNA.  Then DOD started getting a few bodies/remains from Korea and it started all over again.  Which is one of the reasons why today service personnel are supposed to get their DNA profiled before they go anywhere that has a risk of them becoming dead.  Too easy for dogtags (even redundant sets) to get blown away and DNA is like chipping every cubic mililiter of the body.

stay safe.

Actually now it is one of the first things that happens as you in process into the service during your time as a human pin cushion.

Ever see Hamburger Hill?

Really the lesser of the three Vietnam War movies that came out in the 1980s, but good in its own way...

See above.

Very macho but not foolproof.  Works OK for guys that step on mines, but not so well for (among other things) arty that takes away everything above the hips or just leaves pieces-parts.

War is not hell so much as it is gory.

Well there are always those cases.
