People we ought to care about passing away
« on: May 28, 2015, 11:23:19 AM »
John Nash passed away Saturday. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/25/science/john-nash-a-beautiful-mind-subject-and-nobel-winner-dies-at-86.html?_r=0

Unfortunately, most people know about him because of the stupid movie. Nonetheless, he's made serious contributions of the field of economics (through game theory) and has one of the most important concepts of the 20th century named for him. (Nash Equilibrium go here for a fuller explanation.)

Of course, I discovered this by accident in "Suggested Links" from other stories. Would that we had a culture that thought this was news, rather than whatever the new Kardashian baby is wearing.

(Seriously, the man was a Nobel prize winner. That ought to merit a headline at his passing.)

I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

I'm just realizing if he passed away on Saturday, I was busy with a more personal funeral and not paying attention to the news of the day.

So, yes, he likely got more notice than I thought. That's at least heartening.
