Border Patrol helicopter forced to land
« on: June 06, 2015, 10:15:03 AM »
http://news.yahoo.com/border-patrol-helicopter-fired-upon-forced-land-texas-034942866.html

Along the Texas border a helicopter was fired upon and forced to land.

Has this happened before?
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

I would assume that if helicopters had not landed before, a different type of aircraft would be used that did NOT crash.   >:D

forced to land

This statement can have a few different meanings.

Forced landing, as in had to land right there due to the damage, no option otherwise (such as engine failure, transmission damage, etc)

Or

Forced to land as in forced to fly to a suitable area for a precautionary landing and damage check.

Generally if one has been shot at you don't really want to land right there in the vicinity of the shooting, you want to get out of the immediate area.

Article is a little short on details to tell what "forced to land" means in this case.

The shots were from the Mexican side and it is now called an emergency landing.

(CNN)A U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing in Texas after it was struck by gunfire from the Mexican side of the border Friday.

Laredo Police were called by border patrol, who said "one of their helicopters had received gunfire," said police spokesman Joe Baeza.

Well, not landing could also include getting stuck in the air.  That could be a real pain, since repairs would require a huge ladder.

Wait, wait, wait....this is unpossible as Mexico has very, very strick gun control laws.

I would say that making a reasonable decision to discontinue the mission and land as a result of being shot at counts as "shot down" even if the purpose of the landing was to check damage that turned out not to be serious enough to impair the aircraft's safe operation upon inspection in a manner that wasn't possible during flight.

I would disagree. To me "shot down" means the aircraft is no longer capable of flight and is landing RIGHT NOW. If you can fly away and land at your leisure you weren't shot down.

Semantics, I know. In this case "forced to land" to inspect the aircraft seems right.

I do wonder how they decided there were 5 shots fired, 2 of which hit. In my experience with helicopters, inside one isn't the best place to hear and count gunshots on the ground.
