Promotional Baby items?
« on: November 05, 2006, 06:39:40 PM »
As an expectant father I am doing a lot of research right now, even though we still have till March its never to early to research.

I have started to sign up for all the coupons and freebies from the diaper companies and formula companies.  (Hey free stuff and discounted stuff rocks)  While looking around I have found that if you give a “certificate”  at the hospital you can get free bags.

Here are pics of two examples I have found.

It seems if you know what to ask for you can get all kinds of goodies.   So my question is… what are the correct things to ask for.  How can I find out about more of these “deals” and etc.

(Can you tell I am excited that I will be a father?)

Just poke around online, at the hospital, at the doctor's, etc and you'll get more free stuff than you'll be able to use.  Seriously.  New moms trade this stuff around because they get stuff they don't need while others get stuff they do need.  For a while, we didn't even have to buy formula or diapers because we kept getting samples, coupons, etc.

Also, be prepared for your wife to go through diaper bags like we go through holsters.  This one's too small, this one's too big, that one has an insulated section, etc.

My wife is a member of a "mom oriented forum".  I think it's current url is www.mommiesrock.com.  Anyway, if she signs up there, they do a lot of "horse trading" with the "free" stuff, coupons, and so on.

With a new baby will come lots of free things.  Take them all.  You will either find a use for the items, or will know of someone you can give them to who will have use for them.

Some advice.  Get a big diaper bag in a simple dark color.  The dark color will show the dirt less.  Always pack two outfit changes minimum.  I am still amazed by the amount of poop a baby can produce, and the force with which it is expelled from their bodies.  Remember also that, in the beginning, it will be almost all liquid, and diapers are not watertight.  Hence, the need for additional outfits.

Pack as many diapers as you think you will need, and add two more.  The darned tabs rip off sometimes, and my sons also had a bad habit of relieving themselves in the middle fo a change.

Baby wipes are essential.  Pack more than you think you might ever need.  Those cute little containers are nice, but don't hold as much as you will need.  Take two or three.  Keep them full.

Always keep a current bottle of Tylenol or Advil in the bag, especially during teething.

Shout wipes or a Tide stain stick.  I still remember holding my oldest, straddling my leg as we signed up for our first cell phone (6 years ago).  The warm wet feeling on my leg, followed by the laughter of my wife and the saleswoman, and the sight of the growing borwn stain on my khakis...you get the picture.

Love every minute of it, because they really do grow too quickly.

What he said. Smiley

You'll also learn that baby wipes have many, many non-baby uses.  We also found it useful to keep a small "SHTF" bag in each vehicle in case the diaper bag was left behind or ran out of supplies.

Don't worry about getting too much advice ahead of time.  All kids are different, have different needs, wants, wishes.  What works for one kid will not work for another.  Don't stock up on consumables until you know what works for you and yours.  That expensive formula you bought in bulk before she was born?  She might not tolerate it.  My daughter didn't like one formula that looked identical to the other brand we were trying.  Those wipes you bought by the pallet?  They might cause a rash.  One brand of diapers might not fit her well enough to stop leaks while another brand is perfect.  Buy small quantities until you know they're acceptable, THEN buy in bulk. Cheesy  However, don't buy too many diapers of a given size.  When you finally lay in that 1000cnt supply of size 1 diapers, your baby will have a growth spurt and you'll have 850 useless diapers.  Thankfully, my wife warned me of this (what?  They grow too?).

Been there done that, twice.  The hospital will give you stuff.  You can sign up for free stuff at babies r us.  You can get cupons online for it or get samples directly from mfg's of diapers, formula, and whatnots.
If you can't use it, take it to the womens shelter, homeless shelter, or foodbank (formula and whatnots).
