More computer questions from the klutz
« on: July 15, 2015, 11:17:31 PM »
1. Almost two years ago, in Santiago, Chile, I bought a new MacBook for my daughter, who was starting college in Chile. We bought it at an Apple store in Santiago, and I paid an extra $200 or $300 for the full Microsoft Office suite. My daughter is home for a visit on semester break (remember, it's winter down there), and she just informed me that she never received the Microsoft Office that we paid for.

I'm sure the receipt is long gone, and I wouldn't expect the store to believe we went almost two years without noticing that we hadn't received a $300 chunk of the purchase. So I don't expect to be able to send her back to the store and get a new copy of the CD (or DVD). Is there a suitable alternate for the MacBook? Do Open Office and Libre Office run on Macs?

2. My desktop computer still runs XP. I'm using Firefox as my browser. A couple of weeks ago, I started getting pop-ups telling me that my version of Flash Player is out of date and vulnerable. Now I can't play any video without seeing a pop-up asking me to confirm that I want to run it.

But my version of Flash Player is v. 18.xx, which I think IS current. And every time I try to update from Adobe's web site, the process goes through all the steps and then aborts at the end. What's the most current version, and why won't my computer allow me to install it?

Mozilla just recently went apeshit about Flash because of security vulnerability issues. Part of the long term, low level fued with Adobe.

Will Apple, in their infinite Apple-ness, let you download the suite from their servers a-la iTunes? They will have a record of the purchase (or at least should. They keep you tagged in their system for everything else.)

I would give Brad's suggestion a try.  If that doesn't work have your daughter check with the campus bookstore and/or campus IT dept, for cheap ($20USD) copies of Microsoft Office.  Microsoft sells it for cheap on college campuses, just like a drug dealer giving you your first hit for free, as they both know you will be hooked and will make money off of you for a long time to come.

This. Don't bother with the original purchase unless you can easily find the info. Just buy a student or academic version for dirt cheap. The amount of time and stress you'll spend finding all the info will be worth far more to you than a twenty.

Plus, ten seconds after you buy the academic version, you'll find the original info.   =D

I would put Libre on her computer. Given where she's going to school, that may be as, or more popular than MS Office. Lots of foreign governments, institutions, etc.  standardize on the open office platforms.

If she were going to school in the US, or if you otherwise needed MS Office, I would take adively's advice, though it may not be available via the foreign university.

I believe you can work around your Flash issue by downloading Chrome or another browser.  I agree with RoadKingLarry that you are probably running into Firefox currently block all Flash.

That explains a lot.  I've had problems with Flash on my Firefox install for a while now.  Started using Firefox more since the IE 11 install on this box went sideways after a recent update.

I've found that Firefox is getting too bloated, so I switched to Pale Moon and love it.  You can still do all the add-ons for Firefox.

Thanks for that link! I'd not heard of it before. I've been pretty die-hard in the Mozilla camp ever since Netscape, but have started being a little bothered by issues in the latest Mozilla updates, including the occasional memory leak. I'm gonna give it a spin around the block.

If Chrome is the solution, I'm hosed. I tried Chrome once -- that was enough. Never again.

How long ago? It has improved. I regularly spend a lot of time in Firefox, Chrome and IE because I have to support all 3, and there's no substitute for daily use. Of the three, I probably like FF best, but Chrome works very well. The fact that it auto updates itself and keeps its own flash up to date is very handy when trying to keep less attentive people up to date.

Doesn't matter how much it has improved if I can't use it. I have the same problem with Chrome that I have with Opera -- only icons (and very few of those), with no labels and no menus. I'm an analog person, dammit -- I need to read.
