Question about a movie
« on: June 29, 2015, 06:58:50 PM »
A few years ago I saw a trailer for a movie, and I'm trying to remember the name. It was a dark comedy about a man and a girl (maybe 15?), and the trailer gave the impression they were just wandering about committing petty crimes and shooting folk. I suspected it was supposed to be making some points in favor of gun control, though I never saw the movie, so...

Sound familiar to anyone?

Movie is called "God Bless America".

Viking got it. Director was Bobcat Goldthwait. Saw the movie. He should stick to destroying model cities in front of Japanese businessmen while wearing a Godzilla outfit.

I'm kind of curious as to what brought up the question.  The reason is, CBS recently put on "Bowling For Columbine" over the air.  As far as I know, nobody ever put that movie on over-the-air TV before.

So, pardon my paranoia, but we all know the anti-gunners seem to be pulling out all the stops, and I wonder if somebody showed "God Bless America" on TV as an additional propaganda effort.

BTW, with the Fourth coming up, if you can catch the movie "1776," do so.  While it is not 100% accurate, it is highly entertaining and stimulating. "Large portions of spoken and sung dialog are taken directly from the letters and memoirs of the actual participants," says IMDB.

I watch 1776 every year!

Adams: "It doesn't matter. I won't be in the history books anyway, only you. Franklin did this and Franklin did that and Franklin did some other damn thing. Franklin smote the ground and out sprang George Washington, fully grown and on his horse. Franklin then electrified him with his miraculous lightning rod and the three of them - Franklin, Washington, and the horse - conducted the entire revolution by themselves."

Franklin (thoughtful) : "I like it."

The per-fute of happiness.

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

God Bless America, good for a laugh movie.
Someone just pissed off with society, kind of a modernized version of "Falling down".
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

That sums it up.  It's not a good movie, but it's not as awful as Red State, and I mostly agree with this little speech:

Thanks, that was it.

Tot'ly random. I had always wondered what viewpoint the film was pushing, and I thought I'd look to see if it was online free somewhere. Guess not.

Wife and I watched that today; it's free on Amazon Prime.  I liked Richard Henry Lee, and how Franklin encouraged (and seemed to absolute-Lee enjoy) his foolishness.  Patty was impressed with Lee's horsemanship in his first scene.  She's started watching the John Adams HBO miniseries now.

The 1776 "director's cut" is kinda long, almost 3 hours.  I saw it in the theater back in high school; first time I've seen in since.  Don't remember how long the theatrical release was.

I've got the short version, without Cool, Considerate Men. I don't mind too much. My favorite of the more hard hitting numbers is on it, Molasses to Rum.
The only part on the movie I don't like is Momma Look Sharp. Something about that actor bugs me.
And The Lee's Of Old Virginia is also one of my favorites. :)

You've got to remember, it's actually a musical. If you saw it on stage, there would be a nice intermission in the middle, which makes 3 hours much more tolerable. ;)
