Another electronics question
« on: July 16, 2015, 10:26:38 PM »
I figured out a lot of things since my last thread about brushless motors, gimbals, etc.

I need to be able to test hall sensors. The ones that are in the gimbals now that I need to test have maximum voltage of 4.5 to 5.5 volts at 9 mA. I don't know where to find a power source that low. I was originally thinking of using a 1.5 volt AA battery until I read the spec sheet on the sensor.

Any suggestions?

I had a "duh" moment. Doesn't matter what the amperage of the power supply is.

Correct.

Don't PC power supplies have a 5-volt output? Isn't a USB port putting out 5 volts?

PC PSU can have multiple power supplies - at least one should be 5V, but there will be other voltages, both higher and lower.  USB ports are indeed, IIRC, 5V.

Your standard PC PSU outputs 12, 5, 3.3, and -12V.  So theoretically you could get 24V, though not many amps with it.

You can also do funky things to get various other voltages.

You still need a 5V dc power supply? Dug a couple of the right voltage wall warts out of our scrap bin. If you need I'll test them.

EDIT: three work. let me know

I know I have a bunch of USB chargers - 5V@.2A, which is plenty for your purposes.  You'd just need to cut the plug off and wire up a connector as needed.

If you're anything like me and buy a fair number of USB devices like MP3 players, cell phones, and such, you should be able to find one as well.

I had a bunch of USB chargers for my cell phone. Problem is, I kept leaving them in hotel rooms, until I reached the point where I have just one.
