It's no joke. NASA has been sending bears into space for decades now to test the possibility of hibernation for deep space voyages. But something went wrong on one of the test flights. The KGB had managed to infiltrate the program by transplanting KGB agent brains into bear bodies, then releasing the bears into Alaska. Allowing themselves to be captured by NASA veterinarians the sleeper agent bears quickly outstripped the normal bears in intelligence tests, guaranteeing their selection for the program. Once in space the bears mutinied, mauling to death the human crew and commandeering the test shuttle. Their last known vector was on course towards the constellation Ursa Major, which held some special, top-secret interest for the Soviet space program. The official NASA line is that the test shuttle broke up in the asteroid belt...but there are old SETI technicians who whisper that, when the solar winds blow just right, they hear the huffing and snarling of bears echoing through the dark void of space. And every time a female astronaut ascends to the ISS for a months-long mission, it gets a little louder...

Well, I just added another subject to my Ten Foot Pole list.

But there are hormonal Birth Control options that, as a side effect (or feature depending) stop menstruation. Some, like Depo Provera last about 3 months at a time. Others, like Mirena would be more appropriate for a Mars mission.  Seems easier than dealing with zero-G flow.

Also, when looking at longer missions, it could help stop the other side effect of bored men and women in close proximity.

Depends on the woman. Mine had birth control like that. Instead of regular periods, it was something like a half period for two out of three months. Do not recommend.
