LAPD steals your guns, so the criminals won't

I don't get the part about the SCAR-17 being left behind. Was it just hidden? Or if it was sitting out in plain sight, why would the crooks not have taken it?

Although I wouldn't put it past the LAPD to do stuff like that... I'd REALLY take anything Bilzerian says with an extra large grain of salt.

It's the refusal to return the magazines that really gets me. The trumped up argument about not returning the ammunition is bad enough (especially depending on how much was seized and what kind of ammo) but the magazines?

Maybe it was because I grew up with the AWB and spent half my childhood being dragged from gun store to gun store, searching for pre ban mags, but that strikes me almost as bad as taking the guns. Especially when you consider how hard it can be to just to find magazines for rare pistols, much less, how much they can cost.

Sometimes I wonder what would happen if we made the police responsible for all damage they cause.

IE if they cause $5k of damage to find an amount of weed worth a $50 fine, the person pays the $50 and the police have to pay the $5k.

They confiscate your computer?  They have to pay for 'loss of use'.  Etc...

It would have to come from the officers themselves to be a deterrent.

Though I don't think it's possible to reform a tax-funded, union-staffed, immunity-granted anything let alone a police department.

At the least, if you are not charged or are acquitted, they are liable for damage.  That includes damage from failing to store seized material properly.

My point would be to make them responsible regardless, otherwise they'd look to convict you of something - even the most minor of crimes, just to justify them causing an excessive amount of damage.

Like burning down your house then justifying it by getting you found guilty of something like 'having drug paraphernalia' because you had something that kinda-sorta looked like a bong.  Or you didn't have your firearms stored precisely right.  Etc...

Oh, it's possible. Just not culturally acceptable...yet.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Ok. This is theft. Theft of a firearm, which is a federal crime. Why aren't these Barney Fife's in jail?
