It sounds like you can get on the team, or at least could of last year. I would so go out there if my current situation allowed for it!
You tube has a documentary about the attempt to recover a WW2 bomber from Greenland. The team brought in new engines, new propellers, and new avionics and basically rebuilt the plane over the course of a Greenland "Summer." Everything checked out. When they were making their taxi run to fly it out, the APU shifted, shorted, and the plane burned to the ground.I cried.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1u4YBwjQTds
Most of the warbird recoveries and restorations I've read about should be called replicas with a small number of original parts.
It's all in how you look at it. I used to know a guy from Rhode Island who was from a VERY old New England family. He used to tell people that he owned George Washington's hatchet.**(Of course, since GW owned it, it had had six new handles and three new he*ads ... but it was the same hatchet.)
I really wonder why they're going to all the trouble. If we just wait a few years, the ice will be gone and they can get the planes out without any of this special equipment.
