PS3 stupidity
« on: November 17, 2006, 10:09:49 AM »
I saw a line at our local Best Buy this morning - people waiting to try and buy a PS3.

Just now someone showed me an ebay auction that ended a few minutes ago for on. The winning bid was $2800. Two thoudand eight hundred dollars. Heck, for that kind of money you can buy a tricked out PC with a ton of RAM and a high-end vid card that will kick the living snot out of a PS3 and you can surf APS with it to boot!

People can be such idiots.

The people waiting in line to buy a $600 PS3 are the people selling it on ebay for $2800.

Seems to me only one set of people there are stupid Smiley

Locally, an IKEA furniture store opened up just north of Austin, TX on this past Wednesday. I've got a lot of Scandinavian style furniture in my home - all teak - but IKEA appears to be at the K-Mart end of of Scandinavian-style furniture.

They had to chase people away the previous Sunday, since lines weren't allowed to form up before Monday.

They were giving away $80 MSRP chairs to the first 100 people, and an IKEA toy to the first hundred (or 500?) children . . . the "toy" was a heart-shaped pillow with a couple of arms (!) on it . . . kind of creepy, if you ask me.

Some people have WAY too much time on their hands.

If I had $600 to spend on fun stuff, it would likely be on a guitar or gun and I wouldn't be camping out on a sidewalk to get it.  I admit, I have a a PS2 and enjoy it, but I waited until they had been out for about 5 yrs, worked all the bugs out, and dropped the price to $129 before I bought one.  If it broke I'd probably get around to buying another PS2, eventually.  For some people these games must be like crack, and money is not important when it comes to getting their hands on the new goodies.  I saw on the news this morning that some had paid as much as $8000 for them.  shocked  I must be in the wrong business.   sad

The stupidity has spread.  Some burglars shot someone as they were robbing the helpless sheeple waiting in line....guess that $600 would have been better spent on a gun and a CFP....Another locale had a riot break out.....

From what I've been reading the stupidity is the lack of comprehensive backwards compatability that Sony promised.

Now the PC's are either underpowered for new games or running Linux I have considered getting one of these new consoles, but not for a while and the Wii is looking like the most likely candidate for my tastes.

I can't speak for the others, but to me the stupidity/idiociy is the pre-release hype and camping in front of the stores to get something that will be on every store shelf after christmas.
Of course, some of these guys are actually smart, turning around and selling $600 consoles on ebay to the truely stupid for $2k plus.

Heh...I take a page from the burger joint value menu commercials - you know:

"Six hundred bucks?!  Why that's TWO P3AT's and 100 rounds of DPX!  Or a new Glock, or a few thousand rounds of 7.62x39, or a few more thousand rounds of 9mm, or a shoulder holster and a good suit to wear it with, or a down-payment on the Gold Desert Eagle I want...." Cheesy

I say this EVERY time, but "I'm not gonna go for the new nextgen systems THIS time!"

If anything, I want a Wii - I want to download the old SNES Phantom 2040 game and get ALL TWENTY endings this time!  I only managed a few on the Genesis.

They've GOT TO make a Highlander game for Wii, they already have a swordfighting game out there!

I have a PS2 that I enjoy very much.  I bought it new for about $90.  It also makes a very nice DVD player with the addition of the $14 DVD remote.  Somewhere down the line, I may buy a PS3 after the price (inevitably) drops.
For the folks buying them now, they are no different in my mind from the people on gun boards who are intent on being the first guy to have the latest toy from Keltec (that single-column 9mm they've been teasing with for over a year) or the civilian-legal versions of military rifles from FN or the like.  I don't desire any of those things, especially the $$$$$$!!!! stuff from FN, but we live in a capitalist society.  You want it?  You got the money?  Enjoy your purchase!  What I value and want may be different, but the same rules apply.

Getting a Nintendo Wii tomorrow. I agree that video games can be addictive.  laugh

As for the PS3, I think the general consensus on the Web is that it isn't worth it right now. Once FFXIII and MGS4 come out, I'll pick it up, but the PS3 lauch games are basically "Resistance: Fall of Man" and a bunch of Xbox360 ports.

The insanity taking place isn't much different than what took place during the ps1, xbox and psp releases.
The supply shortage that Sony "accidently" created, may increase the hostility.  I'm sure they are enjoying all the hype.

I'll buy an xbox 360 specifically for MotoGP06
I, however, will wait and purchase it much later. I have been waiting for the ps3 to come out so the two can price battle after this Christmas.

I also won't follow the HD DVD and BluRay battle until the dust has settled.
(This coming from an idiot that once paid $700 for an AC3 Laserdisc player just because I had to have 5.1 surround, 6 months before dvd hit the market.  And I knew full well the dvd would be the dominate media.)
Impatience can be rather expensive.

But as stated before that's the beauty of a free market.  The morons with more money than sense pave the way for the rest of us to enjoy proven dependable products at a reasonable price.

I just don't understand why VR hasn't made a real serious market to exploit.

One of my friends bought a PS3, walked out of the store, and someone who didn't get one offered him $1500 in cash, right in the parking lot.  So for a combined three hours of work (waiting on line to pre-order, and then showing up to pick up his preorder) he made $900.  Two other friends are eBaying their consoles--both are hoping to sell for at least 2-3k.

Me, I'm going to wait.  I still feel like an idiot for buying the Xbox 360--sure, there are a few incredible games, but I guess I'm not just a gamer anymore.  Fight Night Round 3 and Gears of War are really the only things buffering my shame.

The Wii, though, looks like the ultimate party console, and if I can't control myself I'll probably end up bringing one home before Christmas.

I can't fathom what possible reasoning any but the ultra rich could have for shelling out 2-3k for a single game console. How can gaming be worth that kind of premium to anybody? Heck, I can't even see shelling out $600. I might get a Wii next year to play with my SO, but the PS3 is going to have to come down a couple hundred, and show me some impressive gameplay and graphics before I'll give it another look.

MotoGP 06 is awesome!  That was the first game I got for my 360.  I highly recommend it.

Heh! looking at the folks (guys) waiting in line in the video, I find myself wondering "how many of those dingbats have ever been laid" . Sorry, but that's what popped into my head.
It's a GAME, people! Do try to find a real life, please?

I don't know anyone who waited in line for hours just to buy a gun, any gun (except for the poor guys who's background check was delayed).

BTW, this is a funny video comparison of the PS3 and Wii: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9136575504838642038&q=ps3&hl=en

I had to bump this one when I read this story:

http://cbs2.com/topstories/local_story_324085857.html

Quote
The victim said that he had advertised the consoles on Craigslist.com, and was trying to sell both items for $5,000. PS3s retail for $500 or $600 per unit.

The seller met the two men around 1 a.m. at a McDonalds restaurant on Moody Street and Orangethorpe Avenue, according to Sgt. Terry Kim of the La Palma Police Department.

One man sprayed the victim with pepper spray, then the pair fled on foot with the PS3 consoles, Kim said.

Soooo....  You're selling two PS3s for $5k, possibly in cash, and you decide the smartest way to handle this transaction is to go to an empty parking lot, in the middle of the night, alone and unarmed.
