CCW Permit Not Good Enough for TSA
« on: November 27, 2015, 10:05:57 PM »
I thought this was interesting. Congresswoman forgot her other ID, so showed her CCW permit to TSA, who refused to accept it as valid ID. I had read about them accepting a Costco card (as she mentioned in her article).

So they'll take a Costco card with a crappy photo, but not a CCW permit, which, at least for the four states that issued me one, requested a good deal more info, including full fingerprinting at the local Sheriff's office, than I had to submit for my driver's license, or my passport for that matter. I have to wonder if it's just TSA being their normal moronic selves, or if politics are involved. It will be interesting to see if this is rectified in congress. Though somehow I think it will result in the "special" pat down for anyone who uses one as their ID at the gate.

This makes zero sense, so it's exactly what we should expect from our post-modern presidency.

I think the "Costco Card" story is BS.

This is directly from the TSA website.

They should have accepted a state issused CCW however, based on the first item on the list.

"Adult passengers 18 and over must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel.

Driver's licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)
U.S. passport
U.S. passport card
DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
U.S. military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents, and DoD civilians)
Permanent resident card
Border crossing card
DHS-designated enhanced driver's license
Airline or airport-issued ID (if issued under a TSA-approved security plan)
Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID
HSPD-12 PIV card
Foreign government-issued passport
Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
Transportation worker identification credential"

As the article states though, the regulation specifically exempts CCW permits from the list, by name.

Over on Fark a dude told me 'but it doesn't meet the RealID requirements!'.  My response was 'That's news to me, do you have any idea how much information I had to submit to get one?'

I can confirm not having my CAC accepted on a couple of occasions I presented it. After that, I just went with my drivers license.  This was early on when CACs were first introduced though. Maybe it has changed now. It could also be related to how close an airport is to large government installations. This happened at the local airport I used to fly out of in liberal land.

On the Costco card:

https://www.google.com/search?q=costco+tsa&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

EDIT: Regarding the CAC, I guess I should say recognized versus accepted, which would tend to support the "morons" argument.

That's not exactly what the article says.

Quote
As it turns out, the TSA agent was correct. Their website explicitly states that “A weapon permit is not an acceptable form of identification” so I decided to determine what is allowed under TSA standards.

The TSA web site also instructs travelers to hand over the key or combination to the lock on their suitcase to the TSA agent. However, the federal regulation specifically requires that the owner shall retain the key and combination. The TSA web site is not a reliable source of what the regulations are or require -- it represents what the TSA would like the regulations to say.

I've seen TSA not accept a TWIC card, despite it being on their list, and being an ID that is issued by the TSA.

TSA feels the need to make sure we never forget just exactly how useless they are.

If IRC, several of the IDs on markdido's list were created post 9/11 with TSA sitting in the room, to include CAC, TWIC, and HSPD-12 PIV.

I flew with a CAC for a number of years in the mid-2000s because my home state didn't require you to renew your driver's license while you were on active duty.  I also call BS on the Costco story.  Minnesota DLs are about to be a No Go for flying because they don't meet the Real ID requirements.  There is no way a Costco card meets the requirements if a state issued DL that doesn't meet Real ID requirements doesn't.

It's been a while since I read it but Az's CCW was specifically NOT an ID. There can't be a photo or signature or anything but your typed name. A form of ID is required to be carried with and produced along with the CCW if it is requested.

Interesting, Ohio's has your photo, your name and address and your signature on it.  I wonder if it would serve as an id, since I had to go have my photo taken, produce my driver's license and my current CCW and be 10 printed and run against state and FBI databases.

My AZ permit is the only one without a picture, though I still had to submit fingerprints and of course get the background check. I can see not accepting a non-photo ID as a primary, but my other CCW permits aren't much different than a driver's license regarding the photo and info on them.

TX now considers the CHL to be a state issued ID card....so the TSA would lose that one I would think.

My VA permit is basically a business card.  No picture, not even laminated (I did make a laminated copy just in case)

My OH and TX cards looked so much like the respective driver's licenses that it was hard to tell them apart. My NC one is a business card...it was not even laminated. I had to laminate it myself because there is no way it would have lasted 5 years in my wallet.

My drivers license has all that, too. IIRC, we have a choice of a DL that meets RealID criteria or one that doesn't. Not sure what the difference is, other than a tiny icon in one corner of the RealID version.

Yep, they've refused to accept my IL FOID card and my VA non-res card, evn though it has my photo, address and same identifying info as my DL.

The SC CWP is considered a State Issued ID, and looks just like a South Carolina DL just with a different colored strip at the top.

Actually now that I think about it, that may not be the case anymore since the format of the DL's changed.

In any case, if we're going to debate which ID's should be accepted, since state requirements and implementation of CWPs vary so wildly, I think it would realistically be too much to ask of the TSA to interface with all states separately to confirm whether or not their CWPs met the requirements.

Given the hoops one has to jump through to get a CCW/CHL/CWP/XYZ permit, you'd think the TSA would prefer those as ID over the DL's which one can get in some states by simply showing up at the DMV and fogging a mirror (and even that may be waived).
