A call for politeness, please
« on: November 10, 2006, 01:07:28 PM »
Dear Members:

I've noticed a distinct drop in standards of posting over the past couple of weeks.  Unfounded allegations about other members, based (seemingly) only on disagreements or different viewpoints, seem to have become rather frequent.

THIS WILL STOP.

NOW.

I won't bother issuing further warnings about it.  You're free to disagree with anyone on this forum (including myself and Oleg) as long as you do so politely and with respect.  Any disrespect or ad hominem comments WILL get you banned.

Please remind yourselves of the name of our forum.  We're the "Armed POLITE Society".

Feel free to comment in this thread if you wish.  I'll sticky it for a few days.

Thanks.

I banned one belligerent, uncivil member yesterday. I am quite willing to repeat that. APS has long been a nice place to hang out. Let's not make it less polite.

Thanks, Preacherman. I've noticed the same thing you did, and was getting more than slightly annoyed about it.

Glad to know that I wasn't the only one looking a little sideways at some of the goings on. Thanks for volunteering your time as a mod.

It's funny.

I swear like a drunken sailor in 'real life', but have no problem coming here and having an intelligent conversation.

I have an idea.   Let's start a web site with the world 'polite' in the title, and people can go here to, gasp, have polite conversation.

Let's also find other forums, like 'my space' or even start one that allows for swearing.

Oh wait, that's already the case!

I guess I'm missing why we keep having this same conversation over and over.  I'm confused.  I consider myself to be a somewhat logical, somewhat intelligent, VERY immature male in his 30's.  I can carry on a conversation without swearing and inciting a riot.

If I can't, gasp, I GO TO ANOTHER site.  Wow.  That was tough.

Guys, and girls, it's not your site.  With the exception of ONE person, we are ALL guests.  If that ONE person wants to drop f bomb after f bomb, it's his house.  If he tells us we can't swear, then don't.  Where's the problem?  Are we that moronic that we can't handle this rule?  Is our vocabulary that simple?

Would you go into someone's house and put your feet on the coffee table after they ask you 100 times nicely not to?  Or do you claim to be protected by the 1st amendment?  THEN WHY DO IT HERE???

One day at a time.

This week, I wonder if I will have to talk to my friends on APS about their offensive conduct towards others...possibly losing friendships in the process. Why subject me to that?

Same goes for me (except I'm a very very very very immature male in his 40's). Somehow I still manage to show up here and usually not be a jackass. If I can do it, anyone can. Maybe that thread on 'how often do you scrap your posts" should be required reading. There have been times when I was about to be a jackass, but then after writing and reading a potential reply, thought better of it and hit the delete button.

Think twice, post once.

Oleg has a very clear statement in a sticky about how he wants this site, HIS site to be. I don't understand why people have to question that, acting as if their rights have been infringed upon. The "feet on the coffee table" analogy is spot on.

The thread title "Good frigging god" would seem to be a pretty direct violation of the rules.  But despite the fact it was reported to the moderator(s), nothing has been done about it.  What gives?

Maybe your email came in the middle of work, so I coudln't do much at once. Also, I wasn't sure what to think of the title (is it offensive or not?), so I am still considering.

If I had known the report function went straight to your e-mail, I would have PM'ed the Preach.  I'll just do that in the future.

I thought such light and insincere use of the word "God" was normally considered to be "taking God's name in vain," and therefore patently offensive to religious folk, especially when coupled with a barely disguised obscenity.  And yes, I know Mr. Irwin considers himself a Christian.

I never understood how that was taking his name in vain, since he has a proper name (or two) and "God" isn't it.

That goes without saying.  But I thought your immediate conflict would be with the forum rules.  Apparently not.  Well, Woden, Gaia, Hecate and Jupiter, I just don't get it.
