How does your state rate in terms of educational level?
« on: February 02, 2016, 05:36:10 PM »
http://www.homesnacks.net/this-surprising-map-shows-all-50-states-renamed-for-countries-with-similar-education-levels-123796/

From the site, they used the high school graduation rate and compared that to an education index compiled by the UN.  I am trying to figure out if Hong Kong is good or bad.

Iowa got China, doesn't surprise me. China is ranked pretty high in reading, writing and math comprehension.

Hong Kong is up there with China, so you got some educated folks there too.

Iowa- 88% more livable that the rest of the US

High School graduation rate is not a very good indicator considering the way our schools push students through.  I am also trying to figure out if they are using % rates or total numbers for graduations.  IMO, basic literacy and math ability should be there after elementary school.

I was thinking that too.

Alabama gets Guatemala. Not surprising. The education level in this area is extremely high, though.

Oklahoma is Syria and Kansas where I was born and raised is Bulgaria.  Interesting that Colorado got the Netherlands and that Massachusetts is USA?

I would also point out that schooling is free here (not really) and pretty much mandatory.  How many of those other countries can say that?

Also, something to think about in terms of our graduation rate.  We have tended to dumb down the curriculum and pass failing students so that everyone can get a high school education even if they don't deserve it.  If our graduation rate is low, it is not because the opportunity isn't there.

I wouldn't say that. Having a high school diploma does not necessarily mean one has a high school education.  If it did, colleges would not have to provide so much remediation.

I guess I said it wrong.  That is what I meant.

However, basic literacy and minimal math skills could be said to be attained after elementary school.  So why is a high school diploma the standard?

This.  I proofread several students' papers in an English 1301 class that my fifth grade teacher would have given me an F on, and possibly recommended special ed.  A friend who teaches remedial toe counting at the university has shown a couple of assignments my six year old could pass.
