Legacy media beclowning themselves on gun issue
« on: April 20, 2016, 05:23:08 PM »
Yeah, I know it's not surprising. It's just that this article led to so many other articles with so much juicy fail, I had to share.

It's mainly about the New York Times, but there's also this bit about CBS:

Quote
For instance, for the state of Florida, the author says:
Quote
Florida comes in at number 30, with 10.2 guns for every 1,000 residents. That’s a staggering 199,828 registered firearms dispersed among 19,552,860 people.

I’m sure the author would be even more “staggered” to learn that Florida likely has over 20 million firearms within its state lines.

The horror! One gun per every hundred residents! That could mean that up to 1% of Floridians own guns!

Old story.  They used NFA registrations and, as they are idiots, assumed all firearms must be registered...and that's the only federal registry they could find.

The assumption in most of the populated (read big-city) areas is that all guns are registered.

I created shock and fear once when I told a recent settler in Colorado that guns weren't registered out here.

It's sort of a reverse Provincialism.  Like a visitor to New York being amazed at the tall buildings, a visitor from New York is amazed at the freedom.

I myself was shocked when I first came out to Colorado from NYC and discovered that.  But I've told that story several times.

It occurs to me that there are probably that many legal, privately-owned weapons in New York City alone.

Imagine when they realize that their "shocking" numbers are actually closer to the fraction that own real machine guns!

In the USA as a whole, there are actually about 100 guns per 100 citizens... the Florida number is laughable.

I may be wrong about the number of legal guns owned by private citizens in the NYC. According to the New York Times, there are about 41,000 handguns registered with the city. I rather doubt there will be enough legal long guns to get them anywhere near 200k. New York values, I guess.

I thought a bit more...closer to 500 million guns.

Also a fun stat...of all the firearms -on earth- something like 50-75% are owned by US -civilians-

It's sort of a reverse Provincialism.  Like a visitor to New York being amazed at the tall buildings, a visitor from New York is amazed at the freedom.

A good many years ago my first wife and I flew to Europe via Air Icelandic, which makes a "refueling" stop in Rejkyevik carefully calculated to provide ample time in the duty free store. Back then the airport didn't have jetways -- we deplaned down a stair and walked across the apron to the terminal.

As we were walking to the terminal, we overheard many of the people from our flight asking each other "What''s that funny smell?" We didn't smell anything unusual -- it took me a few minutes to figure out that these were New Yorkers who had never before smelled clean, fresh air.
