easy to play plot what if, but I think Tolkein nailed the story line and plot years ago.

I had to watch the video and check my written copy to satisfy myself.  I could have sworn he said "run".

Doesn't matter.  If the plan was to fly, there would have been some discussion of it with Aragorn as least.  Also, in the book, Gandalf told them to fly when he first told them to get going across the bridge.

Well, I don't think it's something to read into or get overly serious about. I'm sure the author was being somewhat facetious, simply pointing out, that like many books and movies, the whole thing could have been over in a few minutes if you didn't want an interesting story.

The eagles also were reluctant to help them as much as they did anyway.  Based on the way they interacted with Gwaihir and the other eagles I don't think they'd have gotten the eagles to fly them to Mt Doom anyway.

yeah, plus the mounts the dark riders flew on would have been there.  It would have required a bunch of eagles.

The reptile things they flew were tough.  They could knock down huge slabs of stone off the towers in Gondor without even interrupting their flight path or slowing down.  (at least according to the movie)   =)

So in more modern terms what that guy says Gandalf should do is send the Ringbearer on what amounts to an air raid into an area that has it's own significant air force covered by air search radar (All Seeing Eye) and centralized command and control while wearing an "I'm It!" beacon (the Ring).

Good plan.
