Gun Magnets, Part Ducks...
« on: February 01, 2016, 08:14:08 AM »
Ducks... that's French for two. The cks is silent.

Anyway, after our recent discussion about gun magnets, I got a very kind offer from Battle Monkey of Zardoz, who offered to send me a spare gun magnet that he had so that I could try it out.

The package was delayed by Snowmazilla, but Saturday it arrived, and I opened it to find not one, but TWO gun magnets of this type:

I pulled them both out of their boxes, and immediately violated the first rule of handling powerful magnets by getting my finger in between them when they snapped shut.

Ouch...

They'tr quite powerful, but I was a bit dubious about how well they would hold larger guns, like my S&W 4506, my 1911, or a large revolver like my Model 28 or 58.

Let's just say that its not a problem. The 4506 and 1911 hold VERY securely to the magnet. I tried holding the magnet and shaking the gun loose -- no dice.

The larger revolvers were a bit less secure when mounted horizontally, obviously because of the curved cylinder, but mounted vertically it's not an issue.

I couldn't find any screws short enough to mound it under the table, so I'll need to get, but these things are potent. I don't see where it would be a problem at all for 2 or 3 of them to easily hold a shotgun or rifle.

I'm going to pass off the second one to Mtnbkr so he can experiment with it.

Once again, thanks Battle Monkey!

Why do I suddenly have you pictured in a smoky office, with a snubby under the desk pointing at some shady guest's nether regions.

Uhm... because you've seen me at work?

How are you separating the guns from the magnet? Pulling down forcefully? Tipping? Sliding?

Just curious about the most efficient "draw" method. I guess I would worry about smacking the front sight if you use the slide method.

That really remains to be seen, as I couldn't get a good feel for that not having the magnet mounted. As I noted, I didn't have screws short enough to mount it without punching through the top of the table.

If I still can't find screws short enough, I may end up mounting the magnet on a piece of wood that I glue to the bottom of the table.

As I'm intending on "sticking" the guns to the magnet so that the grip is parallel to the floor, sliding won't be a problem as the front sight won't be in a position to contact the magnet.

Oh, sorry, I thought you had temporally clamped the magnets to something. I'll standby for the after-mounting report. :)

Just imagining how I'd do it, I'd make sure the gun was stuck to the magnet on its left side... me being right handed.  Seems the grabbance factor would be higher that way.

I await laboratory results, though --I'm only talking from my theoretical ivory tower.

What's the coating on the magnets you got?

I'm sure this was answered somewhere, but I wondered about stainless guns being very stickable.  (Others reading just this thread alone might ask, so I figured I'd ask on their behalf.)

Yeah, they have a pretty high escape velocity. Or, looking at it the other way around, a pretty high terminal velocity.

You don't have to look at someone's junk to know exactly where it is in relation to the rest of them. The layout's pretty much the same for everyone...

Well, that is, the same for everyone except people such as yourself, who have been neutered by marriage/life/whatever. If you've been neutered by marriage, I guess my best course of action would be to shoot your spouse's purse.

"What's the coating on the magnets you got?"

A stiff vinyl/plastic or some type. It's flexible, and not brittle, but seems to be very durable.

My S&W 4506 is stainless, and it stuck to the magnet just fine.

I'm now picturing myself at work, a magnet or two under the desk, and a 20 gauge side-by-side, barrels cut to about 10 inches, stock cut to a pistol grip...

That has potential.
No, I'm not mtnbkr.  ;)

I didn't think about it until I read the description at the link, but one place I could use magnets is in my quick access corner safe. The top shelf, while it will hold two handguns, will only hold one if I want to get to it quickly without fumbling. I could probably mount two guns underneath and get to either one quickly. I'm going to have to look into that.

I wonder if they have those at the Museum store at HQ. I may stop by and get a pack to see what they're like.

$24 for 2 strips doesn't seem to be too bad of a deal, either.

I was thinking of a nightstand that I am using that has a cabinet area underneath instead of drawers.  The small door doesn't give a view of the upper part of the interior without getting down on the floor and looking.

Always trying to think of a way to stash a gun that wouldn't be an automatic search location when a thief breaks in.
