Microsoft again >:(
« on: March 25, 2016, 10:10:43 AM »
For about the 20th time, Windows Update pushed KB3035583 as an "important update" even tho' I have it hidden.     That's a Windows 10 upgrade, in case you don't recognize it.  Apparently hiding an update doesn't really do much of anything, it just hides it for that version, and MS keeps rereleasing the same patch with different version numbers.

I don't want Windows 10, ever.  I have it on one machine and don't like it, and more importantly there are no drivers for my printer.

I upgraded to Windows 10 on my Dell Alienware machine . . . initially it was OK, but it soon buggered up the thermal management part of the "Alienware Control Center" software which controlled all the fan speeds and the vents in the case; everything went to 100% so it sounded as if my PC was going to either take off or start functioning like a vacuum cleaner.

Dell was unresponsive, even though a LOT of people had this problem.

Pretty soon my primary hard drive showed signs of imminent failure (I think unrelated to the thermal management issues) and Dell replaced it under warranty with one having the original Windows 8 Pro x64 OS the computer shipped with.

No more thermal management issues.

I'm sure printer manufacturers are loving Win10; when people get around planned obsolescence, having MS force it for them seems to be the trick.

I keep getting the "RESERVE YOUR FREE COPY OF WINDOWS 10 NOW!!!!!!!!"

I keep bouncing it.

After what I've seen on my HP tablet, you can't make Windows 10 free enough for me to be interested in downloading it onto my desktop.

I have it on one of my desktops and installed it on my mom's laptop (she accidentally clicked on a popup asking her to schedule the upgrade, sending her into an endless loop of requests to run the upgrade).

I like it well enough on those machines.  It works fine and hasn't caused any issues I can detect.  I don't see a compelling need to upgrade the other machines, but the two I've done work well enough not to rip it out.

Hello,

For a permanent solution to the Windows 10 nagging, search for and download the "GWX Control Panel."  This tool will block all of the paths that MS is using to try to force this upgrade.  If you decide at some point that you want Win 10 after all the tool can also reverse its actions and let MS have its way with your PC.

Hope this helps,

Steve

I like Windows 10, and am using it on several PC's in the house. I think they did a decent job of melding 7 and 8.

However, the workshop battlestation is staying on 7 for now, because the 10 upgrade broke all my USB SDR Ham radio drivers and SDR# would not work at all.
I promise not to duck.

I upgraded my desktop to 10 fairly early and have liked it just fine. Only problem I've had was after an update it was eating memory, driver update fixed it just fine.
