Update me on the Katie Couric affair, please?
« on: June 22, 2016, 12:35:11 PM »
I'm no expert in Federal firearms laws (who really is?), but it seems to me that Katie Couric and Stephanie Soechtig committed a couple of felonies when they sent one of their minions to Arizona to buy guns.

As far as I can tell, first of all their "guy" bought or attempted to buy guns across state lines without going through a dealer, and second of all, it looks like a straw purchase to me, since their "guy" was buying them for a third party.

Am I wrong, was all that on the up-and-up, or are they going to be prosecuted for what look like felonies to this ignoramus named Terry?

I know that the later events in Orlando have overshadowed the "Under the gun" documentary where Couric and Soechtig made the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) group look stupid by creative editing, but is a prosecution or indictment, or even an investigation, going any further now?

Almost all of the reporters who went to buy guns committed at least one federal firearms crime and I doubt any of them are being charged.

Which pisses me the hell off. Straw purchases, illegal transfers, even the guy in Illinois who was denied purchase should be charged with lying on the 4473. The ATF and the others are facilitating the lies and the push for more gun control laws by intentionally ignoring laws being broken.

Update: laws are for poor people and those who are not politically connected.

Yes it was a crime but no, there will be no prosecution.  If I may mangle a line from Leona Helmsley, "only little people need to obey gun laws".

ETA I'll leave it as is, but I see Balog said it about a minute before I did!

Update: laws are for poor people and those who are not politically connected.

In this case, the ATF rarely prosecutes those crimes.

True.  But in how many of the others do they have video and/or other published documentation of the crime?

Most of them?  The 4473 is documentation, just not published to the public.

Doesn't matter though. The ATF and FBI only use those crimes as add-on charges for bigger crimes.  Couric would have to shoot someone on video to get prosecuted.

I think if you fill out a 4473 and are rejected, you have committed a crime (assuming you did lie on it).  I have heard it discussed a lot that no one has been prosecuted for that.

Trying to find it again, but some city in conjunction with the ATF tried going after straw buyers as a deterrence/enforcement effort, and the claim was that the local CPS/foster care system was filled to capacity in just a day, with the mother's buying guns for gang members and drug dealer boyfriends going to jail, and the children having to be put somewhere.

Lying on the form is a crime.

What an excellent opportunity to break the cycle of criminality.

Time to start building orphanages designed to deal with the huge influx of parent less children. Make it a very regimented almost military type school with a focus on self discipline.

Local service projects, outdoor adventure education and a healthy intramural sports program to round out their education on how to become good humans.

Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

And all the while they'll be seething inside that "the man" took them away from mama.

I don't think it'll have the effect you're expecting.

Something similar has already been tried and failed.  Some called it "Head Start."
