A bad day for cheapskates
« on: August 24, 2016, 12:35:01 AM »
When did Hulu withdraw everything back behind the paywall, and why didn't anybody tell me?

I guess I'll get my TV here, then.

They had a special on NPR about it a couple weeks ago.

I can't stand ads anymore, so I haven't been a patron of Hulu, who I understand pushed ads even to paying subscribers.  If that's changed, oh well.  Not that I'm that interested in broadcast television these days.

They're supposed to have an ads-free option. I'm more interested in a free-free option. Of all the many things that make me murdery, ads just aren't among them. They don't bother me.

What bothered me with Hulu was the combination of frequency and repetitiveness.  The same ad every 8-10 minutes in an hour long show is just dumb, and an advertiser should recognize that and refuse to pay for it.

Yeah. Last year I decided to pay for Hulu and found that they did ads on the payside. It drove me absolutely crazy, so I quit after a month. I actually signed back up a few months ago because they started the "ad free" option for I think $3 more a month over the "pay for ads" option.

That turns me off extra-quick.  Either show ads less often(my preference), make more ads(like how Coke and such will do a number of 'theme' ads), or get more sponsors for any given show - and rotate through them.

The one time I tried Hulu the monoculture ads, shown even more frequently than broadcast TV, at an even larger volume boost(Seriously, I had to rip my headphones off), with lower production values(IE more stupidly annoying), pissed me off.

Though maybe it's them not realizing that people are watching on their computer, and not as accepting of 'generic' ads.

You're lucky, they make me murdery.  Relatively few things do.

You could try ignoring the ads until they're over. :P

Repetitive radio ads can be bad also.  The ad you are indifferent do can become the hated spawn of Satan after having to listen to it for the 15th time.

Mine too; if the advertising is that effective, it should get even more effective if you cut the number of slots and charge proportionately more to keep total revenue the same.  I know about the third time I see the same ad, I start thinking which of their competitors I'll be buying from next time I need that product type.

That was the other thing; they tended to be targeted at an IQ level that would barely be able to turn on a normal TV and select a channel, let alone get Hulu running on one.  Independent used car dealers' local run-of-station ads are generally better thought out than the crap they were running on there.

I pay 11.99 monthly for Hulu for ad free ... they say up front that a couple channels require they run a 30 second ad once prior to a show ... NBC being one ... I can't  think of the last time I saw an ad on Hulu .... for $8.99 they will let you watch all the ads you want ... my $11.99 monthly provides 2 households 1200 miles apart w/ ad free Hulu ... I hate ads ...

It's hard to help NOT paying attention to them when they double the freaking volume on them...  I wouldn't be surprised if they set them to ignore the volume setting on the window and just blare at 100%.

I have a netflix account...  I don't mind paying for stuff.  What I object to, and a big reason I don't have cable, is paying AND being subjected to advertising.

I have Hulu and Sling, I save a ton of money (while keeping the wife happy) instead of the paying a stupid amount of money to Mediacom or Directv/AT&T

THIS commercial... it brings out the most hatiest of hated hate in me.  And it turns the wife's anger dial to 11 and leaves it there.

I've never seen cruft like that on Hulu. Mostly national stuff.

This one ranks up there. I get most my network channels from Rochester, MN and for a while played at every commercial break.

Which is also why I haven't bought a newspaper in years.  I think the last local one I bought had my campaign interview in it.
