My position, when allowed to take human nature into account, my experience running physics models, and the data gleaned form the climategate data leaks is that I would not trust these grant-chasing whores with a syphillic mutt and a tube of K-Y.
The linky above helps to show why: the majority of the land mass and the overwhelming majority of the water areas are not having temperature recordings taken.

When I was modeling the atmo for a small section of someplace geopolitically sporty, several thousand weather station readings from two points bracketing that region (a fraction the size of the climate model chunks)--for merely the summer months--were considered...adequate.
