Range bag reccomendations

Aight smarty folks.  Sis-in-law is looking for a gift for my brother, thinking a range bag - Usually goes with a couple pistols and a rifle to the range, so looking for something multi-purpose, not overly huge, and durable.  Staying under $100.

I have one of their big range bags and it's pretty awesome.  This looks like a great deal similar to what I have.

GI surplus duffel bag is what I use for a range bag.

Lead and steel get heavy.  And toting your own targets with the usual rang bag requires another hand.  And sometimes the firing point is 1/4 mile from where you park.  Don't forget water bottles.  Shoot, why didn;t I pack all this in a bigger bag?

I have this one, in black, and love it.  Very large and roomy for a day out at the range.

The midway bags and cases are good quality and good for the price. I've got a couple of thier rifle cases.
But for a range bag I use a large padded camera bag I found in a resale shop for $5.

I have a version of that Midway range bag the last few years.  Works well and seems to handle a lot of weight in ammo without getting torn up.

Not suitable gift-wise, but for general purposes, my local thrift store had a large selection of various sized bags mostly for less than $5.00.  I got several for various things including two range bags and a large one with a sturdy shoulder strap, many compartments, and a carrying handle for a bug out bag.

They also had a large selection of computer bags for cheap.

Apparently, luggage is a big "take it to Goodwill" item.  (Wasn't actually a Goodwill store and they closed up when the property was bought out, but you get the idea.)

Jes' sayin'.  For general purposes.

Not suitable gift-wise, but for general purposes, my local thrift store had a large selection of various sized bags mostly for less than $5.00.  

I do make it to the thrift shop from time to time, and that's never occurred to me. I've been using a re-purposed tool bag.

That is what I have.  It is a good bag, but big.

Pros:
Tons of room
Dedicated pockets for mags, tools, ear pro, eye pro, etc.  Good storage.
Padded sleeve and pocket for pistols so no extra case/bag is needed
Durable
Shoulder strap
Good price and often on sale.  Several vendors sell the exact same bag with different names

Cons:
Tons of room.  He will be tempted to fill it up.  If he does it will weigh a ton.
Lots of pockets makes it hard to find what you want
No dedicated ammo pocket.  I prefer to dump my ammo into smaller bags rather than go to the range in boxes
Black interior makes it hard to find thing.  I wish it had a bright orange interior.


Rather than one big bag, he might be better off with two small bags.  One bag for ammo and guns, one bag for everything else.

I use something like this. It was a gift, not sure exactly where it came from. It's great, backpack that holds 4 or 5 pistols and most everything else I need. Leaves hands free to carry a rifle case or two; or for the one range I occasionally go to it leaves a hand free to draw if needed. That one range makes me nervous after dark; it's too close to some higher crime areas.

I usually carry handgun ammo seperate from everything else and haven't found anything better than the Dillon border shift ammo bags. I have them for every handgun caliber I own.
