Metal Casting / Jewelry Making
« on: May 01, 2005, 04:24:51 AM »
I'd like to learn to do this but I'm having a hard time finding good resources on getting started.

I'd like some recommendations on books, or good websites, on it. I'm interested in casting metals, not beadwork, or whatever.

Thanks!

Barbara: for casting metals, you're MUCH better off either going through a college, or finding a local artisan. Not only can it be DREADFULLY expensive to get started, it can also be a bit on the dangerous side. Heck... even the jewelers I know who know how to cast don't do their own anymore, but have a "professional caster" handle the chore...

PM me with your rough geographical area, and maybe I can out you in touch with someone (no promises though)

Barbara, check these folks.

Not so much casting supplies, but it's where most of the Navajo artisans shop.

Barbara,

I've done lost wax casting, and it's a blast.  I did mine through a local nature center/adult classes group.  If you're anywhere near a city, you should be able to find a class.  if you're totally stumped, check with local jewelers.  Given that centrifuging molten metal is involved, you really don't want to teach yourself.

Barbara,
Here are some sites I have found informative..
http://www.backyardmetalcasting.com/
http://www.afslibrary.com/
sites like this http://www.foundryonline.com/ are good to just read up on companies that perform your trade of interest. I often find information or ideas just by looking at their sites.

And of course for any materials or equipment you may need try the thomas register
