Pretzels!
« on: December 14, 2016, 07:14:43 PM »
I got the hankerin' to make some homemade German pretzels. I've never done it before. I ended up using this recipe and they turned out amaaazing (use your Cheryl or Carol or whatever (Archer!) voice).

My only deviations were using lard on the baking sheets, unbleached flour instead of bread flour (I never use bread flour for bread) and  I didn't have pretzel salt, so just used coarse sea salt for the topping salt. I also used oatmeal stout for the beer instead of pale ale. It was a bit of work, but one of the few times I made something perfect the first time around. Downing them right now with Bavarian sweet mustard and more beer!

Despite my German background, I've never cared much for soft pretzels.

Hard pretzels, on the other hand? Don't get your fingers near my mouth.

I had some of such a pretzel the other night at the Bavarian Chef (local German restaurant) very good but the salt was a bit heavy. They served it with some really good melted cheese. Delicious.
