I'm stumped as to what is going on between Sam and Zed in those frames. It looks like each as ahold of the end of some line and it looks like Zed's jacket sleeve's coming unravelled.

Looks to me like the phone cord is tangled around Zed's arm.  The strip is a snapshot in time, since its a panarama of everybody sitting on the couch at once.
