Amazon Alexa and First World Problems
« on: January 25, 2018, 09:41:24 AM »
The Atlantic is arguing that Amazon Alexa is not really a feminist because she (it) is a female servant (we need to add the "smacks head into wall" emoticon).  ;/

Seems to me that it wasn't long ago where if someone said "servant" you would think of the name "Jeeves".

Seems to me, in a lot of the world, if someone, male or female, was given an Alexa, their only concern would be how much they could get selling it so they could buy some food to eat.

Amazon should have went with "Pat" or "Chris" as the device name.

Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,

I want one that sounds like HAL 9000 and calls everybody "Dave."

"HAL, add frozen peas to the grocery list."

"I'm sorry, Dave.  I'm afraid I can't do that."

So, are we really now worried about offending an electronic device?  Or offending women (or is it womyn) with a traditionally female name assigned to the electronic device?   [barf]

Maybe should have gone with Artoo, or Twiki, or Gort, or something like that.

Amazon should have went with "Pat" or "Chris" as the device name.

Too common.  You want a 'name' that 'nobody' has, but still sounds vaguely reasonable.

It's like microsoft and 'cortana'.

Angel - your post reminded me of a clip where, I think it was supposed to be the Facebook CEO, was trying to buy something from whole foods - and he ended up buying whole foods.  The company.  ;)

Adively - "*expletive deleted*ck you" would be in too common usage.  ;)

So, has anyone tried "Alexa, act like a supervillian"?

Personally, I like Cortana.
.

.
.
.

Because Microsoft bought her from Halo. Alexa and Siri don't have a backstory. (Or, since Halo is in the future, is that a forwardstory?)
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.
