If you're old enough to remember the Subaru Brat...
« on: July 07, 2018, 04:09:57 PM »
...and if you wondered why it looked like that, well here's the reason:

Quote
The 1964 chicken tax is credited with keeping foreign-made pickup trucks off American roads — because pickups are considered to be cargo vehicles, like cargo vans. The tax also is the reason behind the Subaru Brat, a bizarre-looking car-truck hybrid popular in the 1980s and famous for having two rear-facing plastic seats in the truck bed. Those seats allowed the Brat to be imported under the 2.5 percent passenger-truck duty instead of the 25 percent cargo-truck duty.

From this article.

Tariff engineering is why specifically targeted tariffs don't work out so well. If you want to give an advantage to your native manufacturers you need a general tariff that applies the same level of tax on all products entering the country.

I remember reading about passenger vans being imported then the seats promptly removed and the windows replaced with blank sides.  They'd ship the seats and windows back to be installed on other new vehicles.  Or sometimes used locally as replacement glass, all that.

It was because of this.

Ford did something similar with the Transit Connect: https://www.autotrader.com/car-news/heres-how-ford-cleverly-got-transit-connect-past-i-268141  and Mercedes does something similar with the Sprinter.

Why we never got the Glock 25. Which I really want.

Surprising that Glock won't mount a couple of crappy plastic seats on it.  After all, they'd match.

So, like people creating things like bullet buttons or SIG braces to comply with certain laws.

Since I'm not going to go into business as a licensed FA dealer, I still haven't found a technicality I can use to get my hands on a working Glock 18 without risking a stint in the Graybar Motel . . .  =(
