Other days I hate the NRA. Today is one of the latter.
I just made the mistake of answering a phone call rather than allowing my answering machine to take it. It was a fund raiser for the NRA. Of course, the call was set up to masquerade as an opinion poll -- the first and only question was "Do you support the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh for Supreme Court justice?" My answer was "No." That's pretty clear and unequivocal, but the guy pretended he didn't understand, and had me repeat it.
He then immediately launched into a lengthy (and obvious scripted) spiel that was a tee-up for asking for a $100 "emergency" donation to support the NRA's efforts to ensure Kavanaugh's confirmation. Normally I would have hung up at this point, but I was feeling a bit less curmudgeonly than usual so I stayed on, and asked the guy why, since I had just told him that I didn't support Kavanaugh's nomination, the NRA would think that I might contribute to helping his confirmation. That threw the guy for a loop. I don't know if he went off-script at that point, or if his script anticipated such comments, but he then asked me why.
So I explained that Kavanuagh looks good on the Second Amendment, but he's horrible on the First Amendment. The guy said he would record that, but I'm sure he won't. I'm sure he just went on to his next robocall.
