More death of the English language
« on: April 05, 2019, 01:53:12 PM »
I fell for a bit of click bait on The Weather Channel's web site, and watched a video about an old shipwreck that was discovered in The Netherlands. The narrator reported that the wood was found to have been cut in The Netherlands in 1536.

Quote: "That's nearly half a millennia ago."

Young lady, the singular of "millennia" (a plural noun) is "millennium." As in the Millennium Falcon, for example.

Meh. That's probably just a one-off mistake.

The bloke next to me at work frequently uses a new word I've never heard before: "couplefew." As in, "I think we've got a couplefew of those, if you need some."

A common mistake I see in gun articles is, "I am a big fan of this type holster," instead of "this type of holster."

Give me time, I'll give you all the grammar and spelling mistakes you need.

I suppose "media" versus "medium" is another example of mixed plurality (number).  One outlet would be a medium, multiple ones would be media.  A painting is in one medium, a sculpture another, but art can be in many media.

Then there's "species."

That doesn’t even rate compared to the latest and greatest terms of pop music.

Yes.  e.g. "I observed him through the parlor window as he danced a vibrant rhumba with a Cheeto in his left nostril.  He was smiling."

Very good.  Now what's the plural of Kleenex?

Congratulations to all defenders of the language.  While it changes through the centuries, those atop the battlements are the true heroes.

Keenen sounds like a Germanic verb form. "Ich bin kleenen der haus."

I don't recall having claimed to be an agreeable personality.

It don't matter nohow.  Amusing that folks who crtiticize pop-science "studies" are willing to cite and quote them when it suits them.

There are a lot of implied particles of speech in the lingo.  Example right there:  "It is amusing that folks who..."

"If you give me time...."  "If you" is implied.

"Went to the store today..."  Implied I or We.

I personally violate some rules of grammar for the sake of readability or poesy.  Sometimes 'cause I'm just dumb.

Or, more properly, I do it sometimes because I am just dumb."
