I hate overhead work.

I HATE doing anything under the dashboard or sink and the like.

Why is it "drywall" when it's not on a wall?  ???

Because it's hard to spell drycieling correctly without a hokey mnemonic poem that doesn't even work half the time anyway.

*uncontrollable laughter*

If you want to love working on drywall, I've got some stuff that needs doing that can give you a little perspective.

Most of my morning was also spent dealing with drywall.  Lots of 20 minute joint compound, tape and tedium.

Could be worse. Old house I had was lath and horsehair plaster. Apparently in any one area there can only be one man who works on the stuff. Said man will curse profusely and be highly alcoholic.

I grew up in houses with lath and plaster.

That is easy to work on.

Anybody remember embossed steel sheet ceilings in old houses?

I was told this was done as a firestop.

Came into vogue in the 1880s or so as an easier, cheaper, way to give the appearance of decorative plaster. The fire control aspect was icing on the cake.

Embossed decorative panels are still made today and are seeing something of a mini comeback in decorating trends, especially as wainscoating or backsplash.

I've seriously considered them as a backsplash in my kitchen.

Unlikely. Not nearly as resistant to the spread of fire and the transmission of heat as three-quarters of an inch of plaster.

Did they know that in the 19th century?

And wouldn't applying lath and plaster overhead be one bitch of a messy job?

You couldn't hang a tin ceiling off the joists. It would sag and buckle. It needed more backing than that. Often they were installed over wider boards, essentially super lath, but it wasn't uncommon for them to be hung on plastered ceilings.
