Bayer just lost a third lawsuit regarding Roundup and cancer, to the tune of $2 Billion. All three lawsuits have been awarded in CA, and like the other two, this one is expected to be appealed down.
It is interesting to me not just because of the amount (given to an elderly couple), but because a couple of opposing views on Glyphosate. The World Health Organization suggests (note "suggests", not "proves") it causes cancer, but our own EPA says there is no evidence of this. Considering the political/environmental leanings of the EPA, I found their contradiction to the WHO quite interesting.
The EPA report specifically states "when used correctly", which I assume means in the correct mixture quantities and with adequate personal protection. I've actually been spraying a bit for the last couple of weeks, but when I use it, I'm always in coveralls with nitrile gloves, eye protection, and a proper respirator. I used to see the ag workers in CA dressed pretty much the same, but both there and here in Idaho, I always saw neighbors spraying away with zero protection. In fact here in Idaho, the same with ag people. I've yet to see someone pulling a pesticide tank while wearing any kind of protection.
I'm wondering if the people who have won lawsuits were properly following application instructions. I also saw that Bayer is pushing for upcoming lawsuits to be moved outside of CA. It will be interesting to see how those juries rule.
I'm also thinking of throwing a little money into Bayer stock for a couple of years down the road, when everyone forgets about this.
