The Feds will start up the death penalty again

Apparently, there was a moratorium for years regarding the proper drugs and protocol for lethal injections as it played out in the Courts.  The Feds have decided to conduct executions using a single dose of pentobarbital, which has withstood legal challenge.

Didn't they stop the lethal injections because the pharmaceutical company that made the drugs was in Europe, which decided not to make it or ship it to the US anymore? I foggily remember something like that...?

^^^Many of the lethal injection protocols have had to change in recent years because manufacturers and wholesalers forbid selling the drugs for use in executions.  The same applies to pentobarbital, but you can get around the manufacturer ban by compounding it in a specialty pharmacy.

Yeah, it's hard to imagine Hornady adding a disclaimer to their packaging:  "Not to be used for executions."

According to the news and a great many politicians, America's streets are awash with lethal amounts of opioids. Why don't the prisons just send a couple of guards out to the nearest road before an execution with a bucket to scoop some up?

So KCl bought from a supermarket as a salt substitute can't be used?

I'm not speaking from experience, but if it came down to it, I believe I'd prefer firing squad, myself.

I believe Utah brought that back, and South Carolina is considering it....?

But, you know.... GUH-UH-NS, OMG, eek, ewwww, yuccch.

This, despite having second thoughts about capital punishment at all after hearing about the many innocents having been improperly incarcerated for X years.

Been all over the news here since a local "person" (3 towns over to the west) is scheduled to be executed in Jan 2020.

I just don't understand why we don't use Nitrogen inhalation to execute people. Plentiful, painless (although I am not really in favor of this it does help with some arguments) and cheap. Put 'em in a pressure suit, put Star Trek V on the big screen and pump in the Nitrogen. How easy is that?

IMO, there are lots of easier ways to do the job that are painless.  I agree that nitrogen would work very well and very quickly.  Throw in some nitrous oxide and they will go happy.  They can even get FDA approved nitrogen gas.

I if they used non-FDA approved drugs or materials, there would be a lawsuit over it as silly as that sounds.

IMO, the nitrogen gas thing would probably be the quickest and easiest way to go.  From what we hear in the safety training, people will pass out almost immediately breathing zero oxygen gas.

How about a blurb on an ammo box: "Official Ammo of Federal Executions!"

Shooters would eat that one up!

^Yeah, like the special Zombie Ammo on the market a couple of years ago.

My  understanding of N2's operation is that the body does not sense lack of oxygen in suffocation, but rather, the inability to get rid of its CO2 because the ambient atmosphere is full of exhaled CO2 already.

So what happens with N2, is there is plenty of oxygen-free atmosphere to carry away the CO2 in the body without the suffocating feeling.

But, since there is in fact, little or no 02 in the air being inhaled, the victim drops off to sleep without feeling any suffocation effects.

My further understanding is that many animals are "put to sleep" in this way at the animal pounds.

There are plenty of warnings about this effect any place that uses tanks of LN2 (liquid nitrogen)  --that oxygen in the room may be completely displaced without the users realizing it.

That's my understanding on the Nitrogen method of execution.

Corrections to this information are welcome.

It's faster than that.  Because the gas breathed in contains no O2, the lungs will pull oxygen out of the blood and exhale it.
