The 36-year-old gunman opened fire, killing seven people and injuring nearly 20 more after being pulled over for a traffic violation on Saturday.

This incident happened differently than most of them.  This guy apparently just snapped when he was pulled over for a traffic stop.  He fired at officers, fled the scene and started driving around shooting at people.

According to officials, police attempted to pull over Seth Ator’s vehicle on Saturday afternoon for a routine traffic stop after receiving several complaints about his erratic driving on Interstate 20, a highway that connects the two cities.

When Texas Department of Public Safety officials signaled for Ator to stop, he opened fire.

Ator used a military-style rifle and shot one of the troopers. He then fled the scene, driving west on the highway while shooting at people on foot and in vehicles.

He appeared to fire randomly at the pedestrians and drivers he encountered.

“I have been to too many of these events,” Abbott said. “Too many Texans are in mourning. Too many Texans have lost their lives. The status quo in Texas is unacceptable, and action is needed.”

But Abbott, a Republican, remains noncommittal about imposing any new gun laws in Texas at a time when Democrats and gun-control groups are demanding restrictions. And even as Abbott spoke, a number of looser gun laws that he signed this year took effect on the first day of September, including one that would arm more teachers in Texas schools.

Quotes like that from Gov Abbott bother me, but he has been pro-gun in the past and we just finished our last legislative session.  We won't have another scheduled session until 2021.  We'll see.

I heard it said on the radio that this killer was a leftist and registered democrat, but I haven't been able to find any links that say that.

I don't think it really matters what political/religious ideologies this guy had spinning around in his brain, the fact is he was most likely nucking futs and had no business anywhere near people, much less a gun.
