NJ Last State Where You Can't Pump Your Own Gas?
« on: October 23, 2019, 07:42:51 PM »
I just saw this. Did Oregon stop the mandatory pump jockey thing? I know I live right next door, but I never get gas there. If they did, I wonder how they're handling all the out of work pump monkeys?

As of a couple years ago, you can pump your own gas in Oregon at a stand-alone gas station in rural counties.  I think there was some sort of population limit of the county.  It is pretty much the thinly-populated counties of eastern Oregon.

I knew about that.  I think it's only during certain hours and you still pay the full service price. I just looked it up and apparently they took up another bill in March of this year that would apply everywhere to make one in four gas pumps at each station self serve.

I also reread the stuff about the rural counties and cracked up at some of the panic responses of residents.  I think we may have even had a thread here making fun of them. "It's too dangerous! It's too complicated! I might get gas smell on me!"

If this were back in the 1970's when there was no auto stop on the gas pump that might make sense.  I haven't gotten gas on my person filling up in a long time.

The second link had two where an employee was filling the tank and the woman driver returned to the car and immediately started to drive off without noticing the employee was still filling.  At least the employee was on top of things and pulled out in time.

Some of those I can't tell what is happening.

Of course, here we have the Buc-ee's gas stations with 200 pumps where people pretty much use them as parking spots while they go inside.  I guess they either let the pump shut off on its own or just leave the vehicle there afterward.

Are we not doing phrasing any more?

You are assuming I didn't notice, but that would assume my mind was also in the gutter.  I don't know why anyone would assume that.

My main thought is that people do dumb stuff even when someone else is filling the gas tank.  And watching some of those people, I am surprised they can even operate the car.

I mean, the lady with the lighter. In a normal world that would be a staged video.

I did laugh out loud on the one who couldn't figure out how to get her car on the right side of the pump*.

*At Costco, they have extra long hoses so you can pull up to any side and the nozzle will reach. I like that considering how long the gas lines can get there.

I guess they could do like truck fill stations and have the hoses hanging from overhead.

A couple of those videos of people starting a fire looked deliberate.

Well, the way you phrased it, it sounds like the employee was pumping Ethyl.
