The product cited in the article, Super 8, is a concentrated bleach solution.  Usually, when I read stories like this, the bleach was mixed with something else, usually ammonia, and people dropped like flies.  I will be interested to see the story as it develops and was another chemical used with the bleach.

I assumed that mixing with ammonia was what happened as well when I heard this on the radio. If it was just the bleach, that's pretty rare.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Super 8 is used in restaurant dish washing systems as a sanitizing agent. It's usually in some kind of automated dispensing system. My civic group had a dishware sanitizer at our fundraising restaurant that used the stuff. It's potent. Mix it with some type of acidic agent and things get bad fast.

Story I saw said the guy's exhibited symptom was extreme nausea. I wonder if he ingested it?

Looks like they used a pesticide off label. Nothing on the label about using it on floor. Label even says not to mix with detergents.

Yes, it is a pesticide, EPA Reg. No. 6243-7. Violation of Federal Law to use inconsistent to label. With a fatality, this going to be expensive for the BBW franchise owner.

EPA 6243-7 is for a document clarifying Super 8's use as a sanitizer, not a pesticide.

Super 8 is a fancy product name for sodium hypochlorite solution. It's plain old bleach, albeit at about a 50% higher concentration than the household stuff. It's used in Auto-Chlor dishware sanitizing systems.

If it has an EPA Registration Number it is a pesticide. Clorox Bleach is a pesticide too. This is what I do for a living.

Dr. Michael Copass was the head of Seattle Medic One and the Harborview Emergency Department for decades.  A neurologist by training, Washington had to pass a special law just for him allowing someone other than an emergency medicine physician to head up an emergency department.  After his retirement, he was being interviewed about mass disasters caused by terrorism and he helpfully pointed out that it would be easy and cheap to kill tens of thousands of people if a terrorist drove a chlorine tanker adjacent to Husky Stadium during a football game and blew it up.  I understand that he got quite the talking to after that.

So this is a serious question: pesticides are not just limited to insect control?

If you mix bleach and ammonia, you get chloramine (kinda smells like chlorine but it's not)  If you mix bleach and an acid, you get chlorine.  When cleaning grody bottles, I sometimes add a few drops of hydrochloric acid or vinegar to a weak bleach solution to "activate" the free chlorine.  It got unpleasant really fast when I mixed it too strong once.

  • Yes, your moderation has been outsourced.
Quote from: From the OP article
The episode occurred after a restaurant employee mixed an acidic detergent called Scale Kleen with a bleach-like cleaner sold as Super 8 to clean the kitchen floor, causing a chemical reaction, the authorities said.

I should have remembered that. My chemistry recollection is lacking.
