Quote
An SCDNR spokeswoman said the Drawdys and two other hunters were deer driving, moving deer near to the area where they were set up to hunt.

According to DNR officials, one of the hunters mistook the Drawdys for deer and shot and killed them. Investigators have not said why the victims were mistaken for deer.

I wasn't sure I wanted to post this, but do y'all have any thoughts on it?  There are not very many details so it is difficult to understand.  Any of you have experience hunting like that?

The only experience I have is to be sure of your target and what's behind it. Someone deserves to, at least, go to jail for the rest of his life for recklessly killing two people.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Someone shooting in a direction based on a presumption rather than at a confirmed target is f***tardery at it's worst. Zero sympathy for the *expletive deleted*che nozzles who pull this crap.

This is why I don't go hunting with with others in brushy country. Absolute refusal. It's caused more than a little friction at times, but tough cookies. My life is worth more than your bent feelings. On the odd occasions I do go out with others, it's only in open country and I wear enough blaze orange to light a small neighborhood.

From the picture the daughter was very young, so I can imagine she was right beside her father as they moved through the brush.  So would that allow a scenario where one freak shot got them both?  Even that is obviously irresponsible, but multiple shots (if there was) would be inexcusable.  Hard to say without further info.

Similar things have happened here but I don't understand how unless you factor in idiots that call themselves hunters and possibly substance abuse. A couple years ago a guy was shot by his buddy during a deer drive but they were drunk and the pusher took OFF his blaze orange because they were trespassing.
I no longer send for tags for the firearm season and just bow hunt. I have in the past hunted in several states for whitetail, pronghorn, and elk with rifles.
Scariest thing that ever happened to me was seeing a teenage hunter in blaze orange step out of the woods into the open. I used my binos to check him out and he was looking at me THRU the scope on his slug shotgun! I left my gun behind and walked about a hundred yards to chew his ass out in a loud and definitive way and I told him where his gun was going to go if I ever saw him do it again. Then I left and drove the section, found his uncle and told him some of the same.
What we have here is failure to communicate.

*expletive deleted*it like this is why I stay the hell away from state land during rifle season. People are idiots and nothing good comes from it.

That is all. *expletive deleted*ck you all, eat *expletive deleted*it, and die in a fire. I have considered writing here a long parting section dedicated to each poster, but I have decided, at length, against it. *expletive deleted*ck you all and Hail Satan.

I heard about deer drives when I moved here from the big city.  A criminal case crossed my desk, charging a guy for shooting a "driver" with a 12 gauge slug.  Man, did it make a mess of the victim.  Don't recall the charge.

Game warden explained that the idea is for a group to go through the woods perpendicular to a small number of shooters.  They march through the wooded area, making noise, driving deer towards the shooters.  In a perfect scenario, any shot goes in front of the group, so no risk.  On the other hand, an excited shooter and things can go really bad.

Every time I see stories like this I think about people shooting at movement in the brush or something instead of identifying an actual animal.  I understand your eyes can play tricks on you sometimes such as in the fog, but I don't understand it.  I also know some people think nothing of drinking while hunting or shooting which I think is stupid.

I was also thinking if someone is shooting a semi-auto shotgun, they could get off two shots pretty quick.

I know someone who knows someone down there. The version that got to me is that the deer drive was over and the man and girl were shot by two trigger happy teenagers while they were walking out of the woods. Hearsay of course.
