I am very happy with Magpul's warranty support. They helped me out. It is a small thing overall, but I as happy to see their policy is full support for any of their products no matter who you bought it from.
I am building a 10/22 with a Brownells 10/22 receiver. I bought one of the Magpul X-22 stocks from a 3rd party seller. If you haven't messed with one, there is a barrel spacer piece you have to remove if you are using a bull barrel. It has 3 screws with Allen heads. The first two came right out, but on the 3rd my Allen wrench immediately slipped and I ended up stripping out the screw and couldn't remove it. Later I decided to contact Magpul. Their website says they will support any product no matter who it is bought from. They offered to replace it. After one last attempt at the screw, I asked them to replace it. I received the replacement and sent the original stock back last week. The new stock (with barrel spacer removed) has the my receiver mounted. Just waiting for the barrel (NFA).
The stock is not a big ticket item, but I have lots of feel-goods about Magpul this week. I might have been about to Drammel the screw out, but it saved me a lot of effort.
I had tried a few different Allen heads to make sure I had one that fit the screw correctly. It didn't help. By the time I tried a few things, the screw head was stripped out. A friend helped me use a tap. We were able to get the tap to bite, but could not get that screw to budge. I am not sure if it was cross threaded or something else. They said they put some sort of thread sealant on the screws. I had a suggestion to try to cut a slot in in to try to use a flat screw driver, but the screw is recessed so I didn't want to do that if I didn't have to. On the replacement stock, that one screw was a bit stiff to get out. No slippage, but it required force all the way out so I assume there was some sort of thread locker in use.
Do any of you know if it is cheaper to make Allen head screws versus alternatives like Torx?
Since I got a gunsmithing screw driver set with a good set of flat screw driver heads, I find I almost prefer those screws. If the flats fit right, they are easy to use without slipping out.
