Fly-over honoring first responders
« on: May 06, 2020, 09:31:18 PM »
There was a flyover honoring our first responders today... and it was also Nurse's Day.

A TV station was  interviewing some people as two huge four-engined prop planes went over "They fly so slow," one of them said.

Indeed, with a large plane flying low, it looks like they're just lumbering along.  It's really kind of spooky at the right angles and height.  But they're not that slow, it's just that it takes a long time for their tails to catch up to their noses.

I wondered if other States had flyovers today.

We have one due here Thursday morning in Alabama.  It was supposed to be Tuesday morning but bad weather delayed it.

Yes.  The Blue Angels did a flyover of the DFW and Houston areas yesterday.  They are doing NC and nearby areas today.

There is flyover of NYC by an airline this afternoon.

I didn't see it, but we have C-130s doing touch and goes here all the time.  I've been told by someone who knows (Hoser) that the slowest they can fly is 175-225 MPH.  So, they're going faster than they look.

175 with a clean wing, maybe.  That still seems fast to me.  The A320 can easily get down to 160kts with a clean wing and it has a swept wing.

It depends on things, weight being one of them. A KC130 can refuel down to about 100kts and as fast as 270kts. Stall speed for a J model is around 100kts at max normal take off weight (155,000 lbs). So yes, they can look slow, because they are! :)

The C17s that fly into here look like they are about ready to fall out of the sky!

Before I read the second quote, I thought you were going to make a joke about 2000 ft being a good social distance.

As I understand it, the lower altitude improves the chemical dispersion . . . .

I heard a radio report the flyover of Houston was delayed until Sunday due to weather.  Not certain of the details.

We are getting a flyover today, taking off from Fairchild and making a big loop around central and eastern WA, if I am out I may see them but the thought of a couple of KC 135s that are nearly as old as me flying around doesn't make me want to run outside. There is a Waco YOC (Custom Cabin) based here I would run out to see though. ;)
