Guy who tried to protect a statue in a public park is set upon by protesters, followed by protesters, attacked by protesters swinging long boards, tackled by a protester ... and when he used a handgun to defend himself against an attack that was witnessed by an undercover cop they arrested him instead of the people who attacked him.

What is wrong with the powers that be? This is insanity.

Not long boards. Skateboards, which are worse and have somehow become one of the most popular weapons of the anarchists, which to me kinda says something about their manboy status.

However, I saw video that showed the man in question throwing a woman to the ground before he was set upon by the skateboarders, so this is one of those stories where we need full context and more info.

I have more of a problem with the cops arresting all the armed counter-protestors afterwards as if they were guilty of something.

Maybe the cops are under orders to work as a security detail for the protestors . . . maybe they've also been promised a share of the proceeds if looting begins. (Farfetched? I still remember seeing video of cops in NOLA walking out of a store with armloads of CDs or DVDs and other mechandise.)

An awful lot of police departments have been shown to be worse than useless when there's significant civil unrest - and I don't think all of it is due to horrible leadership.

If you are in a city or state where the “protestors” are bold enough to tear down statues or riot, to are probably in the wrong state for shooting them.

I think the guy will get off, looked like self defense to me. His biggest mistake, going out to defend a statue. You don't win wars scuffling with foot soldiers. Stay home, tend your garden unless it is time to take decisive action. Second mistake, if you are going to be dumb and defend a statue you need to do it with a line of similarly intended people who do not break and run in the face of a mob. So, stay home and leave the street battle cosplay to the red army.

Nothing new here, I've quoted this several times in past riot cycles, but Berkeley CA offers "symbolic arrests" to protestors:
