Appliance question.
« on: August 20, 2020, 12:22:01 PM »
My wife bought a used kitchen appliance that is 120 volt but the cord that came in the box is 125 volt.

Is the cord safe to use, or should she order a 120?

Thank you!

It will be safe to use.  Nominal outlet voltage across the USA is 115 to 125 VAC, though in my experience most locales hover around 118 volts.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

Cords don't have voltage.  Cords are rated for amperage.

Your home circuit isn't going to make a differentiation between 120v and 125v.  What's going to matter is the plug format for the electrical socket, and that is typically a function of rated amperage of the whole circuit.  These have a NEMA rating and name.

Most likely your circuit isn't a perfect 120v anyways.  It'll fluctuate between 115 and 125 volts.

If the plug fits the socket, it should be fine.

120 / 125 = .96.  You need to cut off 4% of the length of the cord to make it work right.

Be sure cut off of the right end or you'll get the power out of phase.

82°F

My line's 119.1VAC (~168 peak volts) right at the crest of air conditioner usage for the Denver area.  Normally it's around 124ish.

Not exactly a brownout, doesn't seem to affect anything.  My secondary computer is still blinking "Standby" every half second.

Lights (mostly LEDs) all seem normal.
