Buy brick and mortar or directly from the manufacturer if you can.

Or from a chain like Target or Wal-Mart that doesn't have third-party sellers.

I can attest that this has happened to me several times over the last couple of years. Every time I wrote a review and put a warning about it in, Amazon killed my review.

I've read it's really bad with batteries.

Good information to know.  I had the idea that if I was careful about which seller I ordered from I could get around that.  Not so I guess.

Not a problem with batteries at all. I ordered some small flashlight batteries from Amazon two years ago and I'm still waiting for them.

And I always though that "fulfilled by Amazon" was protection against shady third-party sellers. Now you tell me it's playing into their hands. We (the consumers) can't win.

I've read that too.  I get mine from Battery Junction now.  I have to buy at least $50 to avoid big shipping charges, but we go through a lot of batteries so $50 worth isn't too much.

I have several items in my "save for later" cart at Amazon that I'd like to buy, but looking at the reviews a lot of folks seem to get getting counterfeits.  So I will wait until I find them at a brick-and-mortar store like Target, or do without.  Or I might try ordering from J.C. Penney's.  Batteries is something else that I don't buy from Amazon.  And I'd like to buy another case of Astra razor blades (I bought my first ones from amzn) but I don't trust them.

It seems odd that there's money to be made in counterfeiting batteries, razor blades, and other items that sell for pennies.  Perhaps it's not about making money but about destroying brands, and the money they make off the sales just subsidizes that.

Is there still a counterfeit problem if you are buying an Amazon house brand?  For example, I buy the Amazon basics AAA batteries, and the Solimo razor refills.

At a guess, probably not.  I doubt they'd accept delivery of house brand SKUs from outside providers.  I don't think they even let other people sell used Amazon devices on Amazon except through their internal Warehouse Deals program.
