DC visit tomorrow 10 October, is it wise to do so?
« on: October 09, 2020, 06:37:52 AM »
Me and my wife are down in Newport News area for a military retirement and are thinking of visiting the Vietnam Memorial and surrounding areas tomorrow on our way back home.  I’ve been there many times but she hasn’t and wants to.  Given the current situation and political unrest (protests and what not) what level of risk are we assuming by visiting good a few hours?

My spidey senses will be on full alert for sure but going in unable to adequately defend ourselves due to firearm restrictions has me a bit reluctant to visit at this time.  Normally when I’ve visited in the past the threat level was low so knowingly going in unarmed was little issue with me.

I’m well aware of the weapons restrictions inside the beltway and have made adequate arrangements to leave our current protective devices at a family members dwelling before entering in the area.

Is it worth the risk or should we postpone for another day?  Thoughts?

DC has been pretty quiet lately. I think you'll be fine.

Here are some planned protests for tomorrow. Nothing really near the Memorial.

The closest metro stop is about 3/4s of a mile, Foggy Bottom Metro Station. That's the orange and blue lines.

Come out of the station and turn right and keep walking down 23rd Street until you get to Constitution. Make a left on Constitution and go about 2 blocks and cross the street at Henry Bacon Drive and you're pretty much right there.

It's an easy walk. I used to do it when I worked at State Department on E Street. I'd occasionally go down into the park and walk around the park when I didn't feel like working. The Lincoln Memorial is right there, and at the other end of the reflecting pool is the World War II memorial. If you have time, I suggest going to it, as well.

Remember that you'll need metro fare cards. You can purchase those at Giant grocery stores and, hopefully, at whatever metro you enter at (IF the machines are working, which is always a crap shoot).

If you're driving, you're on your own. :)

In the past I used to slip in to West Potomac Park and walk to Lincoln and beyond. Not sure if that’s an option now or just ride the metro in.

I'm thinking that if you want to drive in you might have an easier time finding parking these days because tourism is WAY down.

We survived.  Parking was easy in the West Potomac park.  Spent about 3 hours walking around.
