Well, this makes me think about investigating those noises in the backyard at night.

Shoot first.

Also, NODS are nor a bad idea, especially if you live out of town or have a dark yard.

I've been using mine more, even just when taking the dog out to do his business before bed, since I don't have any big dusk-dawn exterior lights outside my place, just a couple of motion activated floods. I'd like to figure out a better/more efficient way to incorporate them into what I grab for "bump in the night". Also, for that defensive use, I really need to actually practice shooting at night while wearing them, which I haven't really done.

You can get a Protec military hockey helmet with a NOD mount and if you want earpro cutouts for under a hundred bucks. I have one (no NOD mount) that I got for hot weather ATV ops when I was at the beach.

I'll look at that. On the one hand, I don't want to look all armchair warrior, but on the other hand, I think it's more important to find what works without worrying about what it looks like.

I just have the monocular, that did come with headgear, but the headgear is kind of awkward for quick donning.

Team Wendy has a decent bump helmet with a NODS Mount.

If you are concerned about Tacticool Looks, the SAR helmet might be for you.  https://www.teamwendy.com/products/helmets-accessories/helmets/exfil-sar-tactical

Along with NODS, Electronic (amplified) muffs are gaining some traction in the "check the noise in the back 40" scenarios.  Nice to both protect your hearing, and be able to hear the rustlers whispering over by the barn.

Night-vision optics.  (I'm not sure what the D is for, "device"?)  But I don't see how that keeps Deputy Fife from shooting you.

Sorry, Night Optic Device.  The "s" should be lowercase.

Night-vision optics.  (I'm not sure what the D is for, "device"?)  But I don't see how that keeps Deputy Fife from shooting you.

Shooting first keeps Deputy Fife from shooting you.  Although, getting Positive ID on Barney about from 75 yds away while he's still dicking around in the bushes with a Surefire gives you the time to look un threatening and meek when he finally sees you.

The NODs comment was more an "in general" comment.  The devices civilians can easily get are better, and getting cheaper.  If your homestead defense plan includes checking out things that go bump in the night, a PVS-14 is super handy for that.  Especially outside.  The new white phospher tubes are sweet.  You can ID different cammo patterns.

It does look really nice.  Maybe someday.  Nigh vision has gotten cheaper... but not cheap.  That piece of kit is on par with the value of my car.

I have been seriously considering selling enough guns to fund a PVS-14.  Just gotta pick which ones.

I have two pieces of NV now.  Both are "Gen2+" Russian tech with some free market refinement.  Both work OK, but they aren't helmet mountable, and they aren't Gen 3.

$3k-$3.5k will get you a nice one.

Do you have a box and a half of 5.56mm and a baggie of mixed 9mm?  Pretty sure that would raise enough funds these days.

I splurged on one of these last year:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010E12YNK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I actually keep it handy as well. I know my hearing isn't as good as it was and they sure make a difference. Even if so far it's only to hear whatever the hell set the dog off at 0200 that I couldn't hear without them (usually far off yotes).

This is why I asked to be taken off the "neighbor call" for my neighbors alarm company- the last thing I want is to be looking at a broken screen door or something when a cop rolls up.

I have 3 NODs at my house.  Night Operation Dog (s) and they hear and see better than I do at night.  If I hear a scream, then I'll go check, after awhile.

If my wife, whom they adore was out there and in danger, Yup.  Me, naw, I don't feed them so they would be indifferent.

If you've already got the NOD,  may I suggest something in the PEQ15 family?

Makes shooting stuff in the dark really simple.

Another vote for Team Wendy as well.

As long as the other guy doesn't also have NODs.

My last pistol red dot said it had night vision settings.  I need to try it with my low light stuff and see how well it works.

All my rifle RDs have NOD settings.  I need to try that tonight.
