Muffler Shops
« on: March 27, 2007, 02:33:27 AM »
So, it's come to my attention that I need a new muffler on my car.  Having never dealt with this particular problem, and not wanting to try my hand at mig welding thin exhaust tube, what kind of shop would you all recommend?  I'm tempted to go to a Midas, but I don't know what to expect price/quality/service time wise.  Any other recommendations?

Around 3000 rpm the exhaust reverberations harmonize with the natural frequency of the cabin, and it feels like your friggin head's gonna explode!

First off where are you Nick?  Second if you are not wanting to give your money to a big chain store look into a Mom and Pop place that may just deal in exhaust.  If you are in the Kansas City area drop me a PM and I will point you to a great little family owned shop.

I'm in Lafayette, IN.  But I will be in Kansas City over the summer for an internship...

No matter where you take it they should first do an inspection and tell you what you need, and then what should be done.  They are two different things.  Get a written estimate and if it seems high, go take it to another place for an estimate.

It may not be a muffler problem, it may just be a mount that's come loose and is allowing the exhaust system to vibrate.  If you need a muffler you will probably hear a leak.

Is it actually a slip fit (pipe slides into another pipe) type connection?

A lot of newer vehicles use bolt together exhaust which is,obviously, much easier to replace a section.

I've had good luck with the local Tuffy shop.  They took the lowest cost approach in my case (welded a plate over a small hole in the manifold).  It's been a good fix for over a year now.  I think they charged me $50...or so.

Good call, but the actual muffler that's on it is fine.  The only problem is the last owner had some kind of "glass-pack" installed instead of a muffler, and it sounds like sh!t.

It's welded.  Looks like a mig weld.

And a whole heck of a lot more expensive.  Idjit rear-ended me, and the insurance guy paid me $350 for the assembly.  I had the Pronto-Muffler guys weld a new tailpipe on it for $20.  Then, I went next door and spent the rest on spiffy new tires.

There isn't much on passenger cars that's slip-fit.  Tractors, yes, but slip-fit and a clamp doesn't stand up to state safety inspection.  Unless the fitting is on a pickup truck aft of the passenger compartment, and then a gaping hole in the exhaust pipe is fine as long as there's a muffler.  Go figure.
