Yellowstone National Park?
« on: March 30, 2007, 12:44:38 PM »
Wife and I are headed out there in mid June for 5 days and 4 nights in the park. This will be my 4th trip to the park and her first. I've seen just about everything that Yellowstone is famous for. We are going to hit all those spots for my wife to see, and I have the hike ot the top of Bunsen Peak planned for one morning.

What I would like to do is perhaps find something out there that is cool and not as heavily traveled/visited. My wife isn't one walk more than a few miles round trip on rough trails.

Thanks in advance

You're lucky.  My ex wouldn't walk more than a few feet, and that on a level sidewalk.  If you couldn't see it from the car it didn't get seen.

Well, your timing is good, but I'd go a little earlier.  My brother and I have gone to Yellowstone twice.  Both times the first week of June.  Variety of weather which is fun, and not so many people as later in the summer.

Make sure you use the sentence "Boy, this is gonna be one HUGE caldera!" around the park rangers...

That is, if it hasn't blown yet.

'I do want to go earlier but wife's family reunion is right before we leave. Personally I'd like to go in September but my school schedules don't work out.

Hang bloody rump roasts from your shoulders and hike through the wilderness.

You should get a pretty good close up view of the local meat eaters... Smiley

I avoid the national parks, including Jellystone.  Too many people, cars, and rules and regulations.  Lots of unspoiled country in the National Forests in MT, places where you hardly see another person.

But then I know where to go and you don't Tongue

Right outside the west entrance, like one block west and 1/2 block south, in West Yellowstone is a very nice "zoo" showcasing wolves and bears.  There's also a nice inside area with exhibits and the usual gift shop.

When I was in Yellowstone fairly recently I saw bison everywhere, deer, elk, bald eagles, otters, coyotes, and other animals I don't recall, but I didn't see any bear or wolves from the roads; we didn't do much hiking to speak of.  The bear and wolf zoo, though, was very nicely done if you want to see the live animals up close.

I didn't know about the zoo.

I've only seen two black bears in yellowstone, that was in June 05 and it was going to town on something on the edge of the road, probably some asshat threw out something sweet from their car. The other bear was in the same location but a cub halfway up a lodgepole pine.

I've seen elk, pronhorn, bison, big horn sheep and one mountain goat in Yellowstone for large mammals.

Seriously... Use the word "caldera" around one of the rangers... Or say things like "Hey bud... do you think the ground is rising?"

I know about the super volcano, I just figured that the rangers have heard that at least once an hour from some smartass. Well if i blows I hope I am at ground zero so I won't have to suffer that much like everyone else will have to.

I don't need bear bells, my wife's bitchin' about hiking on a non paved trail will keep the bears and probably other park visitors at bay.

I remember the first time I asked if she wanted to go on a hike with me to scout for deer. She thought we would be walking on nice groomed paved trails. That only lasted about three steps out the car and down a deer trail I went. I zipped through the sticker bushes and past the honey locust and plums, she managed to get hung up on everything thorny and put a plum thorn into her hand when she decided to use a plum bush for a handhold.

It took almost a year to convince her that it is okay to go hiking off the beaten path. She is getting better and is kind of excited about a few hikes I showed her that I want to go on in Yellowstone.

When you're at Old Faithful, there is a small shack just off The Lodge.  That is where they keep the pumps and timer for geyser.   shocked grin

Talk about that real loud in front of the tourists if there is a Ranger around.  laugh
